Rebel leader's son killed in Philippines
By TERESA CEROJANO, Associated Press Writer
MANILA, Philippines - The son of a senior rebel commander was killed in a U.S.-backed Philippine offensive against an al-Qaida-linked Muslim militant group, officials said Friday.
Troops were still searching for two Indonesian suspects in the 2002 Bali bombings who were seen recently on Jolo island.
Ismin Sahiron, son of Radullan Sahiron, the one-armed Abu Sayyaf commander, was killed in the four-day-old offensive in the jungles of Jolo, said Col. Mohammad Nur Askalani, acting chief of staff of the military's Southern Command.
The father and son, who also had an amputated arm, are among 14 Filipino militants on a U.S. Defense Department list offering rewards for information leading to their capture.
The offensive targets the top leaders of Abu Sayyaf, an al-Qaida-linked group notorious for kidnappings, beheadings and bomb attacks, and two Indonesians suspects of the regional terror network Jemaah Islamiyah.
The Indonesians Dulmatin, who goes by one name, and Umar Patek were seen on Jolo recently with Abu Sayyaf leaders and about 200 guerrillas, prompting the military to launch ground and air assaults. The 2002 Bali bombings killed 202 people.
U.S. troops, who are stationed on Jolo as part of counterterrorism assistance focusing on humanitarian work, were providing intelligence and communications support, U.S. and Philippine officials said.
Philippine troops fired rockets from helicopter gunships and pounded rebels with artillery Thursday, Askalani said. The militants were seen moving on Mt. Tumatangis, near the town of Indanan, an extremist bastion.
"They were hit by artillery briefly to determine their possible reaction," he told The Associated Press.
Officials said about 200 guerrillas had been contained around Indanan, sometimes splitting into smaller groups to elude troops.
Officials have said the offensive has killed at least three guerrillas, but Askalani said he could only confirm Sahiron's death during his visit to Indanan. The reason for the discrepancy was not immediately clear. Five soldiers have been wounded.
A moment of silence please,....okay. YEAHHHHH!!!!!
Dead? Good riddance to bad rubbish.
Keep killing them, the more the better for the civilized world.
I know you are probably celebrating your son's gory death, or martyrdom, or whatever euphemism you prefer... I just wanted to let you know, that most of us here at FR are doing the happy dance too.
You guys crave "martyrdom", we like making you dead. This is as close to a "win-win" situation as anything I've seen in this crazy world lately. Good luck, maybe you will achieve his elevated (or flattened) status soon too.
How did they fight?...one guy holds the gun while the other one shoots?
You have to love Moro Island Liberation Front stories that have a happy ending...
the ol' family tree done got pruned...
Terrorists don't have to be able to aim. If they end up killing more of their own compatriots than infidels, they can still be proud of themselves at the end of a long workday. So a terrorist can use just about any weapon he likes even if he's missing a few vital organs, much less a few limbs.
Nothing like a MILF story with a happy ending.
My favorite line in the article.
Re the father, who is still alive....
