Civilian Damages 1944 vs. 2006 (Heavy Graphics Included)

Posted on 08/03/2006 7:04:02 PM PDT by ml/nj

Last week I considered civilian casualties following D-Day in this thread (D-Day Collateral Damage). Now I consider how the coverage of these considerable civil casualties compares with the present day coverage of civilian casualties in Lebanon and Israel.

Most of us have some idea of what percentage of the present war coverage is given to civilian casualties. Here I present the New York Times Index entries for 1944 for the topics World War II - Casualties and World War II - Atrocities (the latter because the former references this section and so I thought some reports of civilian casualties might have been indexed there. It is important to note that in 1944, there were many other index sections devoted to other aspect of the war. Casualty stories of any sort were a fraction of the total coverage. With that in mind, have at as you search for stories of civilian casualties in the 1944 NYT. (I've highlighted the relevant headings and the few articles related to civilian casualties that I saw in my scan of these pages.)

Not much there IMHO.

I like the report on steel bibles carried by allied troops that were saving lives by deflecting bullets.

What are 'robot raids' on page 1717, first line?

"I like the report on steel bibles carried by allied troops that were

I think they are called "heart-shield Bibles" (although the only ones
I've seen are New Testaments.
I'm hazy on this, but I think that a group affiliated with the mainstream
Churches of Christ give one to each member of the West Point graduating classes.
I can't find the webpage now...saw it maybe 3-4 years ago.

I think robot raids refer to the V-1 vehicles (autonomously-guided, although I
guess that wasn't fully known early on).
See the second article title:

Atrocities, p. 1707, left col., half-way down...
G. Barry of London News Chronicle... alleging that US Supreme Command is
spreading untrue stories about German boy-snipers.

What you wanna' bet that every German sniper in 1944 was age 18 and above!
