Hezbollah claims highest Israeli toll yet
Herald Sun ^ | 4 August 2006

HEZBOLLAH rockets killed eight people in northern Israel today and four Israeli soldiers died in combat in southern Lebanon, the highest number of Israeli dead in one day since fighting began on July 12.

The eight civilian deaths, in the cities of Acre and Maalot, raised to 27 the number of people killed by rocket fire from Lebanon during the conflict.

Four Israeli soldiers were killed in fighting in southern Lebanon, the Israeli army said.

The 12 deaths were the highest number in one day for Israel in more than three weeks of war.

More than 150 Hezbollah rockets struck within one hour in the late afternoon, killing eight people and wounding dozens, police said. It was the largest number of Israeli dead in a rocket attack since eight people were killed in the port city of Haifa on July 16.

The latest barrages showed the guerilla group was still a potent threat to Israel despite Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's declaration yesterday that Israel had destroyed its infrastructure.

"Israel will actively seek out and pursue Hezbollah until these murderous attacks cease and quiet is restored to northern Israel," said David Baker, an official in Mr Olmert's office.

Hezbollah fired more than 200 rockets into Israel yesterday, its most intense one day barrage of the conflict.

Sixty-eight Israelis, including 41 military personnel, have been killed in the conflict, which began when Hezbollah killed eight soldiers and kidnapped two in a cross-border raid.

Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Siniora said 900 people had been killed by Israeli attacks in Lebanon.

A young woman was killed and three other civilians were wounded in an Israeli air strike near the eastern Lebanese town of Baalbek, a day after a commando raid captured five alleged Hezbollah militants there.

The woman was killed and her brother and two other residents were wounded when missiles slammed into two houses in Buday, west of Baalbek, police said.

Moments earlier, Israeli jets destroyed a house in the east of Baalbek, police said.

Israel carried out an airborne commando operation near Baalbek yesterday, the deepest ground incursion into Lebanon since the Jewish state launched its offensive on July 12 when Hezbollah killed eight soldiers and captured two others to secure a prisoner swap.

On a road outside the Israeli city of Maalot today, cars screeched to a halt and motorists ran to take cover in ditches at the sound of explosions. Smoke rose over the town and a nearby forest.

Israeli media said among those killed were three young men from Maalot and a father and daughter from Acre.

Israeli officials issued new warnings to civilians to stay indoors during the fighting.

"People have been holed up in shelters - it is difficult, but people understand that soldiers are still fighting in Lebanon and we will get through this period," Acre Mayor Shimon Lancry said on Channel 2 television.

Some 10,000 Israeli troops have pushed into southern Lebanon in the ground offensive against Hezbollah. Four soldiers, aged 18 and 19, were killed in two attacks by anti-tank rockets.

After the rocket strikes, Israeli Defence Minister Amir Peretz ordered the army to prepare for a possible push beyond a planned "security zone" in Lebanon, to the Litani river, security officials said.

Israel also warned Lebanon in a message carried by state television it would destroy its infrastructure if Hezbollah carried out a threat by its leader Hassan Nasrallah to attack Tel Aviv.

Nasrallah had vowed to act in response to any future Israeli bombing of central Beirut.

The army said earlier it had carved out its planned "security zone" from 20 villages up to 6km from the Israeli-Lebanon border.

These latest casualties should please Christine Ananpour of CNN. She is always complaining about the "unsymmetric" nature of the casualties of Lebanese vs. Israelis.

She speaks like she would prefer more Israelis to die . .

I think the last thing that needs to be discussed is a cease fire. Israel has alot of hard work to do.

People all over the Middle East will now riot and protest the deaths of innocent civilians in Israel. But first this will happen:

Well, I'm going to look for all the angry columns in the media about this outrage, how the terrorists are not respecting the rules of war and killing innocent women and children, how this barbaric savagery against defenseless civilians has to end, that there must be an immediate investigation etc. etc. etc.

I think I'll be waiting for a long time. But the next time an Israeli bomb kills some civilians, it'll take only a few minutes.

The MSM shrieks with outrage when civilians are accidently killed, but is almost completely silent when civilians, as in this case, are targeted and murdered.

How is it possible for cars to be moving in Lebanon since the infrastructure has been destroyed and oil shipments cut off?

I don't feel real sorry for the Lebanese who die due to collateral damange. Number one, they shouldn't be in areas where there are know Hezzies, and number two they should be fighting he Hezzies alongside the Isrealis, which they are not doing.

according to the UN, Hezbollah is a political party, not a terrorist group.

Isn't this one of the best lines to come out of the despicable U.N. of late?? Yes, and Bill Clinton is an American patriot, and not a traitor, either. An equally insane statement.

Every time the Hezis launch, they expose their launchers to IDF attack. Once the launchers are gone, the rocket attacks will stop, even if the Hezis have 1,000 of rockets left. It's just a matter of time.

AP, AFP and Reuters, are disappointed the ZAKA's are not making a media parade with the corpses.

FRmail me to be added or removed from this Judaic/pro-Israel/Russian Jewry ping list.

Warning! This is a high-volume ping list.

Why won't the MSM show the photos of Hez dressed in jeans and other civilian clothing manning anti aircraft guns? Perhaps, the truth about the Hez cowards would ruin their headlines. I am tired of the MSM sitting far away from any real combat danger telling the public how dangerous their jobs are. Maybe they want Combat Hotel Badge with 5 stars?

Agreed. Most of them were and STILL ARE supporters of Hezbollah. I do feel sorry for their children, though. It must really suck to grow up under the nightmare of Islam.
