Republican State Senator Joins Democratic Party (Oklahoma)

Oklahoma City (AP) - The state Senate gained a Democrat and lost a Republican today.

Senator Nancy Riley says she's switching from the Republican to the Democratic Party because the G-O-P is being taken over by the extreme right wing.

Riley says she was completely ignored by the Republican caucus during this year's legislative session. She believes her treatment is because of her moderate views and because she's a woman.

The move increases the Democrat's majority in the Senate to 26-to-22 and Riley is in the middle of her four-year term so she doesn't face re-election this year.

Democratic Senator Mike Morgan says Riley's move shows momentum is shifting back to the Democratic Party.

Riley recent finished third in a three person race for the Republican nomination lieutenant governor but surprised many by getting 23 percent of the vote.

I'd like to see where the Republican Party is being taken over by the extreme right wing. As far as I can see, the two parties walk hand in hand.

They bicker and posture, but you're assessement is just about right.

It looks like a very heavily GOP district to me. She might not last another election as a Dem.

Every one of us "freepers" should beat a drum telling the dumb public, "YOU HAVE AN EMPLOYEE (actually several employees)".

The mentality once the politician is elected is that they are self employed. NOT TRUE!

How many of you that do have non state employees would allow the employee dictate the terms of what their job description is.

The public in general does not realize they HAVE AN EMPLOYEE!

"IMO, any politician serving their term who wants to switch parties should be required to resign that position. Her constituents didn't elect a Democrat. Effectively forcing one on them without their consent is fraud."

In the United States, people vote for people, not for parties. In Oklahoma, you can vote straight party line, but if you do and inadvertently vote for a candidate you don't support, that is your problem. I have left individual lines on ballots blank before rather than vote for someone i did not like, regardless of their party affiliation.

Apparently for good reasons.

[ It appears that the GOP is being taken over by Liberal, Big-Government Republicans. ]

Exactly.. the pubbies have a right wing?... WHERE?..
I can see zero right wing anywhere near Washington D.C.

'Female allegiance' - good term. I don't have it either. I don't know that there are more idiots than smart people, but it means nothing to me that someone is a woman. Color my brown behind wholly unimpressed. I prefer male honkies. There you have it.

When Harry Reid was crying about how mean Republicans had been to decry the nomination of Harriet Miers, he said that she would be such an asset, a step in the right direction, ..... He said that we should keep the Supreme Court resembling America.

When I'm working, I have to be in neighborhoods I don't like. I can't stand that, "Piss, piss, piss, piss, piss. Mira! ....." I much prefer some chunky white guy remarking to some other construction type, "I didn't know they were having a beauty contest here today." Or some such similar nonsense. And I'm not the only one who feels that way. One professional that I call on told me that when he travels (with his wife), single females somehow latch on to him (and her). I understand intuitively why that is. That's what I want to see on the Supreme Court. Needless to say, Clarence Thomas is 1 of my 3 favorites, and I will do cartwheels if JR Brown gets on there, but I definitely have no 'female allegiance'.

Dirk Kempthorne is already doing things that please me. I loved Gail Norton in that position, but Dirk's definitely the man. That's my America.

Riley is exactly the kind of scumbag that needs to be purged from the GOP.
Good riddance to foul garbage.
