As the unit responsible for hostage situations outside of Israel, Sayeret Matkal is most notably known for its role in Operation Thunderbolt in 1976, when it helped rescue 103 Air France passengers who were being held hostage in Entebbe, Uganda. IDF soldiers entered the Entebbe airport at night, kill eight terrorists and recovered all but two hostages. The only soldier lost that night was the mission's commander, Lt.-Col. Yonatan Netanyahu.

In 1972, four PLO terrorists hijacked a Sabena airliner carrying 99 passengers and 10 crew members on route from Brussels to Tel Aviv. In an mission entitled Operation Isotope, 16 members of Sayeret Matkal posed as refueling and technical personnel and stormed the plane, killing the terrorists and releasing the passengers.

GO ISRAEL!

Zechariah, 11:

[1] Open thy doors, O Lebanon, that the fire may devour thy cedars. [2] Howl, fir tree; for the cedar is fallen; because the mighty are spoiled: howl, O ye oaks of Bashan; for the forest of the vintage is come down. [3] There is a voice of the howling of the shepherds; for their glory is spoiled: a voice of the roaring of young lions; for the pride of Jordan is spoiled. [4] Thus saith the LORD my God; Feed the flock of the slaughter; [5] Whose possessors slay them, and hold themselves not guilty: and they that sell them say, Blessed be the LORD; for I am rich: and their own shepherds pity them not. [6] For I will no more pity the inhabitants of the land, saith the LORD: but, lo, I will deliver the men every one into his neighbour's hand, and into the hand of his king: and they shall smite the land, and out of their hand I will not deliver them. [7] And I will feed the flock of slaughter, even you, O poor of the flock......

A Call For Your American Soul

By John E. Carey
Thursday, August 3, 2006

We have some news that may cause the naïve to pale. It is a simple truth every Ambassador and diplomat worth his salt can easily explain. Peacekeeping is done in advance of war. Peacekeeping is like fire safety: it is all the tiresome daily work of ensuring that people discuss, understand and get along.

Once you have stored fuel in a hot closet for a long time, and it bursts into flame, no amount of fire safety will help. You need the fire department now. You need hose teams and they better be good.

So, to the news that Pope Benedict XVI and Kofi Annan are “really concerned” tonight I say: too late boys. Where have you been?

Shops owned by Jews across Rome in Italy were vandalized and defaced with swastikas in an apparent neo-fascist attack linked to fighting in the Middle East, officials said Wednesday. Here’s a place the Pope can help. How about motoring down the street Pope Benedict XVI and see what you can do about that?

I am especially distressed at the conduct of the United Nations. The UN has had a special force, the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, Unifil, for 28 years. When does “interim” become permanent and then morph into “worthless”? I ask Kofi Annan. But we might also ask the Israelis, who have redefined “fed up” this past three weeks.

We write this as dawn is breaking in Lebanon. We, thankfully, are not in the Middle East. But in a night of phone calls to men and women in the area, we hear mostly resolve like we have never heard before. Israel is united and resolute this morning. They are in Lebanon to kill their sworn enemy, and no olive branch is going to slow down their progress.

This is about the future security and peace of all Israel and all the world. Just ask the Israelis.

I like our prospects in Iraq more and more this morning too. I like our prospects in Iraq a lot more now that Israel is taking care of an ugly rats’ nest called Hezbollah.

We are in a global war against terror. The we is you and me. Forget France. All the others are questionable except maybe Britain. And the Brits are ready to keel haul Tony Blair because he is in agreement with George Bush.

Nobody else is.

World opinion must be right, correct? Several hundred million people cannot be wrong, right? George Bush is a fool, right?

Wrong. I have never been more sure of anything in my life.

On the war against terror; George Bush is a genius. On this he is certain: the terrorist want us dead and they have or seek the means to make that happen. 9/11 was a stunt. The terrorist have said they want a total inferno in the US. Well, Israel is answering in kind. Forget fire safety and peacekeeping. Too late.

Right now, a volunteer group is eradicating the biggest nest of snakes or rats (pick your vermin) in the world. Israel has come to the plate and they intend to play ball. They are pounding Hezbollah into submission.

Submission is not a term that many Americans understand. Our world is neat and clean and virtually a Garden of Eden compared to the Middle East. But let me tell you something: the world is ugly. About six in ten in the world want you dead. Actually, according to some reports, more. And they are coming. But they made the mistake of coming for the Israelis, first, a month or more ago.

They are coming after Israel: a state without friends. The Jews are hard to like; the Arabs believe it. Just look at the swastikas in the “Eternal City” this morning. I guess racial hatred is eternal in Rome. Hitler almost made the entire Jewish race disappear. Now Hezbollah, and their friends, take their shot.

Good luck.

Don’t bet on the terrorists. We are with Israel; and every American along with every freedom loving people needs to be on our side. The Israeli side. The side of peace and freedom.

Israel has suffered over 2,000 missile strikes in the last three weeks. Many into Haifa, their third largest city. Over 230 missiles on Wednesday.

If a hand grenade went off in Chicago, our third largest city, and terrorists were to blame would you care? Notice? Get excited?

Two thousand missiles into Chicago would get your attention, I hope?

This is real. This is not imagined. And this is in our laps.

We Americans are the world’s only superpower. I didn’t make that up: I asked my allied friends.

The French hate us for that. They still long for a long-ago empire. Russia: same.

So now we have Iraq. Never mind why we went there. Never mind that Saddam used chemical weapons in an attempt to eradicate the Kurds, some of his loving subjects. Never mind that Saddam created, instigated and sustained an eight year war with Iran, draining the blood from his people and the people of Iran.

He is a snake. There are none larger.

In Iraq, the U.S. is fighting hard. I’ve been there, seen it; sweated. It is not pretty. But it is necessary. It is vital. It is a war between democracy (us and our allies) and hate and terror. And the cream of American youth are there helping you and me stay free. Right now. Today. And every day. This is the crisis of our times. Believe it. This is our World War.

We are already in World War III.

And where do you stand in all this? What have you done? Where will you be when gasoline is $10.00 a gallon and missiles are landing in L.A.? Or in your home town?

On the fourth of July, when most of us were enjoying the fireworks and a cook out, North Korea launched a bunch of missiles. They are working on a missiles that can hit L.A. For real. Our intelligence people tell us, with certainty, that Iran’s missile engineers were right there side by side with the North Koreans on the 4th of July.

The people we are fighting are desperate and crazy. They have weapons of mass destruction and the ballistic missiles to deliver them to your door. To your children.

I stand with my American men in Iraq and elsewhere. I stand with my President. I stand with righteousness.

Which side are you on?

Thank you for this article Mr. Carey! I think you are right on. We need to wake up to the fact that this is WWIII, and start acting like it. One thing I'd disagree with you on, I don't think Bush is a genius on this war, certainly better than the alternatives, but not nearly as tough as he should be, and he doesn't explain things well enough to the American people. But he does have his hands tied politically by the Pelosi treason coallition.

Your statement about the world ganging up on Israel makes me want to cite the rest of Zechariah 12:

[2] Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of trembling unto all the people round about, when they shall be in the siege both against Judah and against Jerusalem.
[3] And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces, though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it.
[ 4] In that day, saith the LORD, I will smite every horse with astonishment, and his rider with madness: and I will open mine eyes upon the house of Judah, and will smite every horse of the people with blindness.
[ 5] And the governors of Judah shall say in their heart, The inhabitants of Jerusalem shall be my strength in the LORD of hosts their God.
[6] In that day will I make the governors of Judah like an hearth of fire among the wood, and like a torch of fire in a sheaf; and they shall devour all the people round about, on the right hand and on the left: and Jerusalem shall be inhabited again in her own place, even in Jerusalem.

Great article, John! Thanks.

After studiously trying to stay perfectly neutral, yesterday I came to the conclusion that I could no longer maintain that position.

All right-minded people must back the State of Israel against the militant Islamic threat. This is a fight that Israel must not lose, and we are d*mn' lucky that they have the gumption to fight it for us.

Israel deserves 100% of our support.

It took me a while to arrive at this conclusion: it is considered and well thought-out and I am thoroughly convinced. And your article articulates it perfectly.

Just curious, if you don't mind sharing, what was your reason to be neutral in the first place?

Welcome our friend Hunter to the defense of Western civilization. As you went through the mental process of determination in the matter, no doubt you realized the endgame of the enemy.

They have no civilization to bring to the world. They bring instead servitude, slavery, traditional oppression in every form and backwardness. And they call it their Caliphate vision for the globe.

Sadly for us all, there is no escaping this enemy. Either he will be vanquished, or we will. There is no other choice but to face the unpleasant reality.

OK, I will:

You'll probably find that most people, outside the USA and Israel, are neutral. For the most part, the strongly-pro-Israel sentiment is seen as predominantly an "American thing."

I could see wrong being done on both sides. I did feel that Israel's responses to attacks were hugely disproportionate and way over-the-top -- and therefore saw some merit in "the other side of the story".

And, when mixed in with other issues like the Occupied Territories (settlers encroaching on property that does not belong to them) saw no reason to come down strongly on the side of Israel.

I have now changed my viewpoint. But it took time and careful consideration of the ramifications of the current conflict. Most people probably couldn't be bothered, as it was alot of hard work.

> Sadly for us all, there is no escaping this enemy. Either he will be vanquished, or we will. There is no other choice but to face the unpleasant reality.

This enemy has no majesty, no vision beyond hatred. They are not like my Islamic friends: in all likelihood, this enemy hates them, too.

I think it is no exaggeration to see Militant Islam in the same light as we should have seen National Socialism in its infancy, when it was still young and small enough to be stomped on. Twenty years later, the world hadn't acted and was fighting for its survival against a brutal and determined enemy.

We should have seen this is the Khmer Rouge, too. And Stalinist Socialism: Churchill was right, and our tanks should have kept driving east once they got to Berlin...

As a Civilization we don't learn. We never have. But maybe this time -- thanks to a determined and courageous, small country like Israel who has stood up on Her hind legs and fought back -- maybe this time we can stop the evil before it gets out of control.

Yeah, it took a while, but I've figured it out.
