ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Orange County deputy who was struck by a hit-and-run driver on Interstate 4 on Tuesday died Wednesday night.

Orange County Sheriff Kevin Beary announced that Deputy Michael Callin was removed from life support and died at 7:25 p.m., WESH 2 News reported.

Beary also said that in addition to his severe leg injuries, Callin suffered serious brain damage from the collision.

Police arrested a man on Wednesday who they said ran down Callin on Tuesday. Callin had clocked the driver Allan Barahona, 19, from his parked motorcycle and had stepped into the raod to stop the speeding car, when the car swerved at him.

The suspect left the Orlando Police Department just before 5 a.m. to be transported to the Orange County Jail. He was found just after midnight and officials said he's responsible for running over Callin at I-4 and Kirkman Road near Universal Studios.

Officials said on Wednesday that Callin's leg was amputated below his knee.

Before Callin's death, Barahona was facing charges of attempted murder of a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest. He was found at an address in the 5500 block of Cortez Drive in Pine Hills.

"He is from Honduras, but he has been living in the States for quite awhile. His driving record, from what I understand, is pretty bad, and he has multiple suspensions. I don't know how many, but from what I understand, quite a few," Orlando Police Department Lt. Brian Gilliam said.

Callin was a four-year veteran of the Orange County Sheriff's Office, and he came from a law enforcement family. His father is a 27-year veteran of the department and his sister is a student at the police academy

The hit and run drivers made it an issue by coming into and staying in our country illegally. Its not an "immigration" issue. Its an issue of criminals be allowed to run free in our communities.

It also reinforces the idea that if one is willing to break one law (entering/staying/working illegally) he is probably more likely to break other laws (dui/hit and run/etc).

"If he had run down an ordinary peasant, you could rest assured that little if any effort would have been spent in locating him."

That happens ALL the time, not to mention the rapes and murders that go unsolved buy these undocumented perps. There are parts of Goldenrod and surrounding Orlando areas I WILL NOT go!

Just more evidence that the government only cares about itself, and to the government, the peasants/taxpayers are only there to be fleeced on April 15 (like we needed more evidence)

"And of course, when you are hit by illegals, there is no insurance, no recovery, etc."

You are SO right about that! My aunt was hit in a crosswalk by an illegal (California). She almost died. Was in hospital or rehab for over a year. They didn't think she would ever walk again. Thank God, she recovered. However, it was HER insurance that had to pay for everything, and she never did find out what, if anything, ever happened to the illegal scum.

What a coward. Strike a man with his car, run away, and then attempt suicide. He's got a long painful life ahead of him.

We'll never forget Deputy Callin.

Losing a officer in the line of duty is really sad. I would not defend the perp who hit the officer but the officer jumped out in to the lane to stop the car with hand raised. I have seen this tatic used in my town and it seems very risky. I would be amazed to find out if this is taught at the academy. If the officer followed policy he would be here today and the illegal would be shipped back after serving time.

But our culture is so enriched by illegal immigrants colonists Why even NYC's Mayor Bloomturd took time out from his crusade against the second amendment to let the rest of the country know he thinks (like anyone west of the Hudson cares what he thinks) our economy can't do without them.
