Syria Tells Troops to Be Ready for Battle
(Full Story)

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has placed his military on full alert, citing "regional challenges", and vowed to continue supporting the "Palestinian and Lebanese resistance more than ever".

In a speech to mark the Syrian Army national day, Mr Assad said the volatile situation across the Middle East required "vigilance, preparation and readiness" and ordered all units of the armed forces to be on alert.

The comments were interpreted by Israel as a morale booster to the Syrian armed forces and not a call to battle. Israeli intelligence chiefs have assessed that Syria is not in the mood for an open war and is instead content to resupply Hezbollah guerillas in Lebanon.

Insurgent Mortar Attack Kills Iraqis; U.S. Soldiers Kill Two Terrorists

WASHINGTON, August 4, 2006 –
Three Iraqi civilians were killed, and nine were injured yesterday when insurgents fired a mortar round at a residential area in Ubaydi, Iraq, U.S. military officials reported.

The mortar round landed directly on a home. No coalition personnel were killed or injured in the attack. All nine injured Iraqi civilians were immediately medically evacuated to a nearby U.S. military medical facility. The wounded civilians’ exact condition is unknown, but four were listed as requiring “urgent surgical” medical care, officials said.

Marine Corps officials said the attack was intended to strike a nearby coalition forces outpost. Ubaydi is located in western Anbar province, 20 kilometers from the Syrian border. The Marine unit that provides security along the border is the Twentynine Palms, Calif.-based 1st Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment.

Also in Iraq, U.S. soldiers manning a security tower in Mahmudiyah were fired upon Aug. 2 by terrorists driving a yellow van. The soldiers returned fire, but the van continued to travel north. Iraqi security forces eventually stopped the van and detained the driver for questioning. Two dead terrorists were discovered in the back of the van with rifles. Both had been killed when the soldiers initially returned fire, officials said.

“They fired upon our soldiers, who have every right to defend themselves,” Army Maj. Steve Stover, from Multinational Division Baghdad, said.

Expelled Saudi knew two hijackers

The Saudi student expelled from New Zealand as a national security threat knew not one but two September 11 hijackers, according to Government papers.

An Immigration Service analysis mentions a "direct association" between the student, Rayed Mohammed Abdullah Ali, and Nawaf al-Hazmi, a hijacker on American Airlines Flight 77, which flew into the Pentagon...

Saudi student pilot in the wrong place at the wrong time

Arizona may seem as unlikely a magnet as New Zealand for Muslim students aiming to study overseas. Yet well before New Zealand climbed on the international education bandwagon in the late 1990s, Arizona had established a niche with students from the Middle East.

It would emerge only after September 11, 2001 that among the thousands drawn to the Grand Canyon state's desert climate, universities and many flying schools were members of an al Qaeda cell.

Two months before the attacks on New York and Washington, the FBI's Phoenix office alerted head office that "an inordinate number" of Middle Eastern students were training as pilots at Arizona flight schools. One was a Saudi Arabian who attracted little attention - Rayed Mohammed Abdullah Ali, the English language student thrown out of New Zealand in May as a threat to national security.

Ali's goal, then as now, was to become a commercial airline pilot. His burden in the post-September 11 climate is convincing authorities that he has no other intent...

Alton Towers (UK) calls off Muslim Fun Day

Iran: We supplied Zelzal-2 to Hizbullah

Iran admitted for the first time on Friday that it did indeed supply long-range Zelzal-2 missiles to Hizbullah.

Secretary-general of the "Intifada conference" Mohtashami Pur told an Iranian newspaper that Iran transferred the missiles so that they could be used to defend Lebanon, Channel 1 reported.

The extent of Iran's intimate involvement in Hizbullah attacks is starting to emerge.

According to the defense establishment, the reason Hizbullah has not fired long-range Iranian-made Fajr missiles at Israel is due to Teheran's opposition. Israel now understands that without direct orders from the ayatollahs, Hizbullah is not allowed to use Iranian missiles in attacks against Israel.

The IDF also believes that it seriously damaged the long-range rocket array in the first night of air strikes almost three weeks ago and impaired Hizbullah's ability to fire the rockets.

The longer-range Zelzal missiles, manufactured by Iran and capable of reaching Tel Aviv, have also not been fired at Israel, and the IDF believes this is because it destroyed almost two-thirds of these in the Hizbullah arsenal.

Jannati, who heads the powerful Guardians Council, said that the United Nations was an instrument in the hands of large world powers.

“The support of Muslims for Lebanon’s Hezbollah in any shape or form is an absolute necessity”, he added.
