Threat Matrix: Daily Terror Threat - August 2006

Posted on 08/01/2006 9:51:52 PM PDT by nwctwx

:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Syria Tells Troops to Be Ready for Battle
(Full Story)

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has placed his military on full alert, citing "regional challenges", and vowed to continue supporting the "Palestinian and Lebanese resistance more than ever".

In a speech to mark the Syrian Army national day, Mr Assad said the volatile situation across the Middle East required "vigilance, preparation and readiness" and ordered all units of the armed forces to be on alert.

The comments were interpreted by Israel as a morale booster to the Syrian armed forces and not a call to battle. Israeli intelligence chiefs have assessed that Syria is not in the mood for an open war and is instead content to resupply Hezbollah guerillas in Lebanon.

UCLA Professor of Islamic Law Says Lies About His Views Have Led to Death Threats
An Islamic-law professor at the University of California at Los Angeles says he has faced death threats since Arab-language news media, in the Middle East and the United States, have carried reports that Iranian authorities have endorsed his murder.

The reports, which have said the professor, Khaled Abou el Fadl, supported Israel’s attack on Hezbollah in Lebanon, are “a total fabrication,” he said in an article in the Los Angeles Times.(snip)

UNfreakinBELIEVABLE........

Even more unfreakingunbelievable is that we are staying in the UN and abiding by edicts of countries that detest us and all we stand for.

US forces arrest top Kurdish Al-Qaeda 'bomb-maker' ~ near the oil hub of Kirkuk,
TurkishPress.Com ^ | Published: 8/28/2006 | US military - Major General William Caldwell

Posted on 08/28/2006 8:27:36 PM PDT by Ernest_at_the_Beach

BAGHDAD - An alleged Al-Qaeda militant suspected of bombing the office of President Jalal Talabani's party in northern Iraq has been arrested near the oil hub of Kirkuk, the US military said.

US military spokesman Major General William Caldwell said the militant, an Iraqi Kurd, was arrested on August 19 and is a "bombmaker suspected of orchestrating some of the most horrific bomb attacks" in Iraq.

Caldwell said he is considered an "explosive expert producing suicide vests, improvised-explosive-devices and detonation devices and is known to have facilitated the movement of high level leaders of Al-Qaeda in Iraq."

He said the captured individual was also close to the Abu Ayyub al-Masri, who allegedly took charged of Al-Qaeda's Iraqi subsididary following the June 7 death of Jordanian militant Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.

During the operation, five suspected "terrorists" were killed and another five detained, he told reporters.

"Intelligence does indicate that the captured terrorist was also involved in the bombing of a Kurdish political party headquarters in Mosul on August 15," Caldwell said, referring to the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK).

On August 15 a truck bomber detonated his load of explosives near the PUK office and killed eight Kurdish peshmerga militiamen and wounded 51 others.

Caldwell said in a series of operations against the Al-Qaeda network in the month of August, US forces conducted "140 assaults, killed 17 individuals, wounded five and detained 300 suspects."

Indonesia has used its computer crime laws to arrest two Islamic terrorist suspects.

And how many times have we heard of that happening and being heralded in the good old US of A?

Real Estate jihad

Snip: Last Friday, a plea was issued in the name of jailed Al-Qaida leader, Abu Musaab Al-Suri, calling for attacks on Britain. The message was as follows: “Let our sleeping cells wake, the war is at its apex. The enemy is about to collapse. We warn Britain: respect Muslim scholars in general or jihad people in particular. Doing anything to harm them and your country will pay a high price.” According to reports, this call was posted to 20 websites associated with Al-Qaida. Mysteriously, it did not make it onto Al-Suri’s own website. But many other things have, including information on the purchase and sale of residential homes in the United States. Al-Suri’s website is a For Sale By Owner real estate company, located in Pepper Pike, Ohio.

On its face, www.fsboa.com is a normal looking real estate site, with property listings and such. The slogan on the site reads, “HELPING BUYERS AND SELLERS MEET THEIR REAL ESTATE GOALS.” However, when one appends to its web address a couple of letters, “vw,” he/she is taken into an entirely different universe – the official website of Syrian terrorist Abu Musaab Al-Suri, al-Muqawama al-Islamiyya al-‘Alamiyya (The International Islamic Resistance).

FBI leaves 9/11 off Most Wanted List

Snip: The description of Osama bin Laden on the FBI's Most Wanted list omits his most notorious act, masterminding the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington.

Bin Laden has boasted of his role in the attacks but he has not been charged with them. The FBI traditionally only mentions crimes when there has been an indictment, The Washington Post reports.

The description does mention allegations that bin Laden orchestrated the bombings of U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania. Bin Laden faces federal charges for those attacks.

Bye Bye Terrorists

Snip: Operations by Iraqi security forces and Coalition troops this week resulted in the capture of multiple suspected terrorists and terrorist associates.

Chemical warfare protection developed

Snip: U.S. scientists say they`ve created a fabric with polyurethane fibers that may prove a boon to protection against chemical warfare.

Seshadri Ramkumar, an assistant professor at The Institute of Environmental and Human Health at Texas Tech, and graduate student Thandavamoorthy Subbiah discovered the honeycomb polyurethane nanofabric by using electrospinning. The nanofabric, created by exposing polyurethane to high voltage, cannot only trap toxic chemicals but also be used in a hazardous material suit.

'These fibers are tiny,' Ramkumar said. 'They`re about 1,000 times smaller than microfibers. We are able to develop honeycomb-like structures with this method, which makes a mesh within a mesh. This may not only provide increased surfaces area but also can trap toxic chemicals more efficiently.

'This can be a very efficient filter against toxic chemicals, as well as a membrane for protecting people,' he said. 'This will provide a significant boon to chemical protective clothing as well as a method to trap chemical warfare agents.'

Canada's chemical warrior

Snip: Ottawa defence scientists have designed a first-of-its-kind protective suit to deal with terrorist chemical and biological attacks while giving military personnel the same freedom of movement they would have as with a regular combat uniform.

Defence force volunteer shot and mutilated [Thailand]

Defence force volunteer shot and mutilated

Villagers threatened, told to leave homes

A defence volunteer's ears were chopped off, his throat slashed and his body riddled with bullets in Narathiwat's Sungai Padi district early yesterday during a spate of violence by southern insurgents.

The body of Sama-ae Joeha, 50, was found on a road in tambon Riko in Sungai Padi district, police said. His head was almost cut off, police said.

Witnesses told police Sama-ae was delivering sweets on a motorcycle when he was attacked by at least two men who hid in bushes at the roadside.

In Yala, the chief-of-staff of the 1st special task force, Col Wattana Kromkhan, and three other officers narrowly escaped a roadside bomb attack in Yala's Bannang Sata district on Sunday night.

The bomb was detonated as the officers' vehicle passed the spot. The blast damaged the vehicle and left a two-metre-wide crater in the road.

The attack followed an explosion on Saturday which killed the 1st special task force chief, Col Sutthisak Prasertsri, and Pvt Phanuwat Tanya in the province's Than To district.

Two men, Awae-useng, 40, and Sapae-ing Sapibuema, 49, were arrested at their homes in Yala's Bannang Sata district in connection with Col Sutthisak's death.

Police seized a spike-making machine in yesterday's raid at Mr Awae-useng's house.

They have questioned the two men and will examine spikes found at the scene of the attack to see if they were made by the seized machine.

A 100-strong team left empty-handed after searching Khumphi Wittaya Islamic school and houses near the attack scene.

A source said Ma-ae Aphibalbae, a leader of the Runda Kampulan Kecil (RKK), was believed to have masterminded the bomb attack. His group has been linked to the deaths of security officers and teachers in the area.

Col Sutthisak and Pvt Phanuwat will posthumously receive a 10-step promotion, army chief Gen Sonthi Boonyaratkalin said. Col Sutthisak will be made full general and Pvt Phanuwat a sub-lieutenant.

The family of Col Sutthisak will receive compensation of 4.5 million baht and Pvt Phanuwat's family almost one million baht.

Gen Sonthi yesterday visited four other officers injured in the explosion on Saturday. The wounded had been transferred to King Mongkut Hospital.

Elsewhere in Bannang Sata district, fear has gripped local villagers after notes were left on their doorsteps demanding they leave their hometowns.

"We have no idea where to live and work. The pressure has been mounting. Our fruit and rubber trees have been cut down and torched," said Pimpan Suankaew.

She said no one dares to attend the funeral rites of her late sister Somporn Chatthong, a suspected police informer, and husband Sujin Musigasong, who were both murdered.

Security in the far South and for caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra and senior military officers was the focus of the National Security Council meeting yesterday. Caretaker Deputy Prime Minister Chidchai Wannasathit said he had received intelligence reports two months ago that southern militants would target high-ranking officers.

Current suspected Bin Laden location

Snip: U.S. intelligence suspects al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden is hiding in Chitral, a region in northern Pakistan, the Pakistani Daily Times reported Aug. 25, citing anonymous intelligence officials. The sources based their conclusions on an examination of trees seen in bin Laden's video footage dating back to 2003 and the length of time it takes for audiotapes from bin Laden regarding recent events to reach the media.

Al Qaeda "higher-up" nicknamed "Abu Reuters"

Snip: "Al Reuters" is a derrogatory term used in the conservative blogosphere for the Reuters news service. But it turns out that Osama bin Laden valued the western media so much that one of his media advisers had the pseudonym "Abu Reuters." Al Qaeda videos are specifically designed for play in the Western media, with its own production company providing English subtitles. Said one CNN producer, "The media meant and still means a lot to them.”
