Threat Matrix: Daily Terror Threat - August 2006

Posted on 08/01/2006 9:51:52 PM PDT by nwctwx

:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Syria Tells Troops to Be Ready for Battle
(Full Story)

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has placed his military on full alert, citing "regional challenges", and vowed to continue supporting the "Palestinian and Lebanese resistance more than ever".

In a speech to mark the Syrian Army national day, Mr Assad said the volatile situation across the Middle East required "vigilance, preparation and readiness" and ordered all units of the armed forces to be on alert.

The comments were interpreted by Israel as a morale booster to the Syrian armed forces and not a call to battle. Israeli intelligence chiefs have assessed that Syria is not in the mood for an open war and is instead content to resupply Hezbollah guerillas in Lebanon.

FACT: What I don't know is more than what I do know.
Trying to rectify that, though.

Hamas to start its Satellite TV channel within few weeks

Gaza, August 28, 2006 (RNA) – sources closely associated with the Islamic movement of Hamas said on Monday that Hamas will inaugurate its satellite TV channel at the beginning of October.

A year a go Hamas established its terrestrial TV channel, but the TV remained operating on the pilot running system. All the same the TV helped the movement to broadcast a lot of its reports and to transfer its views to the public. It also played a decisive role during the electoral campaign when it stood for the parliamentarian general elections on January 25.

The sources made clear the satellite channel will start broadcasting depending on Nile sat. The breakthrough will mark Hamas as the first Palestinian faction that possesses a satellite TV channel.

It is worth mentioning that several Palestinian TV channels are preparing for starting their broadcast within the few coming days in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

I heard notes were spread around the aircraft.

Would you please elaborate on that?

"UN will not stop Syria sending weapons to Lebanon"

Heck, the UN is probably bringing them with, to sell to Lebanon.

The pilot, may he rest in peace, did the right thing.

This guy:

A bystander jumped into the pond and pulled Edesess and three passengers out of the water, he said.

.....is a hero.

I know you directed this to Cindy but I'm going to answer also.

When this story first broke on the news, the reports were of multiple notes spread throughout the aircraft. Not just one note. It wasn't until perhaps, an hour after the story broke that this information morphed into a single note. So, who knows if there was just one or more.

.. look over here.. no... over here..

more of the same.

I've heard more than three news channels today, so don't remember which one...but one of them said several notes were spread around the plane.

Another plane crash.

Plane carrying 7 crashes in Kentucky
2006/8

begin snip:

JACKSON, Ky. - A small plane carrying seven people crashed in a wooded, mountainous area of southeastern Kentucky on Monday, and authorities said no survivors had been found.

"At this time, no survivors have been located," said Kentucky State Police Trooper Jody Sims. He did not have further details on the crash site or any bodies found.

Kathleen Bergen, spokeswoman for the Federal Aviation Administration in Atlanta, said seven people were aboard the twin-engine Cessna that departed from Kickapoo Downtown Airport near Wichita Falls, Texas. She said she didn‘t know the destination because the pilot did not file a flight plan.

There was rain, thunder and light fog in the area for much of the afternoon, said Tom Johnstone, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Jackson.

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "There was rain, thunder and light fog in the area for much of the afternoon..."

How sad.

Why fly in this kind of weather?
I just don't understand.

Thanks to you both.
This one's a bit strange as they're being tight-lipped about the note/s.

This headline says note"S", yet the body of the article list it as a singular note:
Jet diverted after threatening notes found
http://www.duluthsuperior.com/mld/duluthsuperior/15382743.htm

Checking this google:
http://news.google.com/news?hl=en&lr=&tab=wn&q=notes+plane&ie=UTF-8&scoring=d

Fox news article had it as noteS, but the story has since been changed.

Could be a simple mistake....

Column One: Terrorist theater tricks
Jerusalem Post ^ | 8?28/06 | Caroline Glick

Posted on 08/28/2006 5:44:59 PM PDT by dervish

What are we seeing when we watch events from the Middle East on our television screens? Is it news or is it terrorist theater?

Let us observe two media events which occurred on Sunday in Gaza. Sunday afternoon released hostages and Fox News journalists Steven Centanni and Olaf Wiig spoke before the cameras. The fact of their release and their statements were reported by more than 1,000 news organizations throughout the world.

At the press conference, Centanni and Wiig, who were forced by their Palestinian captors to convert to Islam, praised the Palestinians. Centanni said, "I just hope this never scares a single journalist away from coming to Gaza to cover this story because the Palestinian people are a very beautiful, kind-hearted and caring people that the world need[s] to know more about." Wiig similarly praised the Palestinians.

While their remarks were covered extensively, no one seemed to think that the fact that their first post-release statements were made at a Palestinian Authority sponsored media extravaganza in Gaza was significant. No one noted that the men were flanked by Palestinian "security forces," and stood next to Hamas terrorist leader and Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh.

No mention was made of the fact that the two were initially kidnapped by just such PA "security officials," or that Haniyeh is one of the leaders of one of the most fanatical jihadist organizations in the world, an organization that the majority of the "beautiful, kind-hearted and caring" Palestinians voted into office last January.

That is, no mention was made of the fact that until the two men left Gaza, they remained unfree. No one asked whether they had been given the option of not giving a press conference in Gaza...
