Threat Matrix: Daily Terror Threat - August 2006

:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Syria Tells Troops to Be Ready for Battle
(Full Story)

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has placed his military on full alert, citing "regional challenges", and vowed to continue supporting the "Palestinian and Lebanese resistance more than ever".

In a speech to mark the Syrian Army national day, Mr Assad said the volatile situation across the Middle East required "vigilance, preparation and readiness" and ordered all units of the armed forces to be on alert.

The comments were interpreted by Israel as a morale booster to the Syrian armed forces and not a call to battle. Israeli intelligence chiefs have assessed that Syria is not in the mood for an open war and is instead content to resupply Hezbollah guerillas in Lebanon.

Security alert lifted after baggage scare at IAH

HOUSTON

The FBI is questioning a man after a bomb-sniffing dog alerted officials to his luggage.

The bag was on Continental flight 52 from Argentina. The dog alerted officials when the plane arrived at the international terminal.

According to airport spokeswoman Marlene McClinton, officials found what appeared to be a small amount of explosives on the bag.

The Houston Fire Department said the owner of the bag works in mining, and he explained that he had the residue because he deals with explosives all the time.

The bag's owner is still being questioned.

Had my gallbladder removed yesterday. Feeling better, but my midsection is pretty sore when I move around. Fortunately, little moving required to surf the net LOL.

Umer Hayat To Be Sentenced Today

Originally Arrested In Terrorist Investigation

(AP) SACRAMENTO A Lodi man wrapped up in a headline-grabbing terrorism investigation is to be sentenced today in Sacramento federal court.

Umer Hayat, an ex-ice cream vendor, was arrested in June 2005 on charges of lying to the FBI about his oldest son's terrorist training in Pakistan and his own visits to the camps.

His trial ended in a hung jury and he agreed to plead guilty to unrelated customs charges.

He says he expects to walk out of court today a free man.

25 Alleged Foreign National Sex Offenders Arrested (CA - 8/25/06)

The enforcement effort was part of Operation Predator, which is responsible for the arrests of more than 8,200 sex offenders nationwide.

(CBS) LOS ANGELES Twenty-five people were arrested during an operation targeting "foreign national sex offenders," including a Mexican man who allegedly tried to kidnap a 7-year-old girl, authorities said Thursday.

The enforcement effort was part of Operation Predator, which is responsible for the arrests of more than 8,200 sex offenders nationwide.

More than 1,100 of those arrests were made in the Los Angeles area.

"These pedophiles pose a serious threat to the well-being of our children, our families, and our communities," said Robert Schoch, special agent-in-charge of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement office of investigations in Los Angeles.

Personnel from ICE and the U.S. Attorney's Office conducted the three-day enforcement action.

Four of the suspects -- two Salvadorans, a Honduran and a Mexican -- had been deported from the United States previously, ICE reported. They are being prosecuted for "re-entering the United States after deportation," a felony that carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison if convicted.....

While a ground to air missile is cause for concern, I'm more interested in how it got into the backyard and how long it has been there. If it is leftover training munitions overlooked in the development of a residential area on top of an old training range, then it is not really an indication of terrorist activity. If it is of new manufacture, recently buried, then I would be exceptionally concerned.

2 Jets Diverted for Security Reasons (OK, NC, AZ, IL, MN, UK - 8/25/06) Aug 25 1:37 PM US/Eastern

A U.S. Airways jet flying to North Carolina was diverted to Oklahoma City after an air marshal subdued a passenger involved in an incident with a flight attendant, an airline spokesman said.

Law enforcement officers were questioning the passenger after the jet landed at Will Rogers World Airport, said Morgan Durrant, a U.S. Airways spokesman. He did not disclose the nature of the problem between the passenger and the flight attendant.

The Airbus A321, which left Phoenix at 6:15 a.m., was to resume its flight to Charlotte, Durrant said. There were 141 people including crew members on board.

Also Friday, an American Airlines flight from Manchester, England, to Chicago was diverted to Bangor, Maine, for security reasons, authorities said.

FBI spokeswoman Gail Marcinkiewicz declined to discuss the nature of the problem.

Flight to Chicago lands in Maine

BANGOR, Maine Another trans-Atlantic flight has been diverted.

Officials say the flight from Manchester, England to Chicago has landed instead in Bangor, Maine.

A spokeswoman for the Federal Aviation Administration says the American Airlines flight was diverted for security reasons. She provided no additional information.

Police confirm there's been an incident at the airport, but they're also not elaborating.

Federal agents are on their way.

A reporter for the Bangor Daily News says the plane is on the tarmac with its engines off, and that the local bomb squad has been called.

BBC now confirms flight is American Airlines, reason being that a passenger is on the 'No Fly list' on that flight.

So now I am hearing about dynomite that was found in a man's luggage at Newark airport. When I did a search for news, all I can find is the following:

http://www.kwtx.com/home/headlines/3736626.html

>>Bomb Scare Causes Anxious Moments At Texas Airport
August 25, 2006)--Life at Houston's Bush Intercontinental Airport is getting back to normal after an early morning security alert.

Officials say a bomb-sniffing dog detected a suspicious scent on a bag that had just arrived from Argentina aboard a Continental Airlines flight just before dawn Friday.

A search of the bag and its owner, however, turned up an unspecified item that had a scent characteristic similar to dynamite.

Authorities determined the item posed no threat and stood down from their alert and operations are returning to normal. <<

If this isn't the same flight and the same person, then this would be the 2nd incident arising out of a flight from Argentina today.

If it IS the same flight and incident, then the question is, how in the world did Houston miss the dynamite in their search????

Update on dynamite in luggage article:
http://www.dfw.com/mld/startelegram/news/state/15362236.htm

Dynamite found in airline passenger's checked luggage, FBI says

KRISTEN HAYS
Associated Press
HOUSTON -
>> A college student's checked luggage on a Continental Airlines flight to Houston from Argentina on Friday contained dynamite, and federal authorities are investigating why he had it and what he intended to do with it, an FBI spokeswoman said.

The dynamite was found during a luggage search in a federal inspection station at Bush Intercontinental Airport shortly after Continental Flight 52 landed about 6 a.m. Friday. Marlene McClinton, spokeswoman for the Houston Airport System, said a bomb-sniffing dog "had a hit" on explosive residue during a further search.

She said Customs and Border Patrol and the FBI shut down the customs area and began questioning the passenger who had the luggage. The identity and age of the passenger, a man, were not released.

Houston Fire Department Assistant Chief Omero Longoria said the man told fire officials that he works in mining and often handles explosives, so that would explain the residue. He said federal officials were investigating whether the man's explanation was true, and the fire department's role in the probe ended upon determining the man's bag did not contain a bomb.

Dunlap also said the man was from Connecticut and attends Lafayette College in Easton, Pa.

After departing Houston, Flight 52 was kept from the terminal when it landed at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey about 1:40 p.m., said Marc La Vorgna, a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the airport's operator.

"It's been brought to a secure area of the airport for some additional security screening. Passengers are being bused to the terminal," La Vorgna said. "It had nothing to do with any individual passengers, from what I understand. This is more precautionary than anything else."<<
