Woman gets two months in jail in slavery case

CENTENNIAL — A Saudi woman was sentenced to two months in state jail Tuesday for theft after essentially stealing the services of an Indonesian woman whom prosecutors said was held as a virtual slave for four years.

Sarah Khonaizan, 35, also was ordered to pay $90,000 in restitution and ordered not to have any contact with the 24-year-old woman. The judge credited her for 15 days of jail time already served.

Last week, a federal judge sentenced her to five years of probation and ordered to pay $26,275 in restitution after pleading guilty to harboring an illegal immigrant.

Her attorney, Forrest Lewis, has said she wants to return to Saudi Arabia and will not fight deportation, which he expects to occur after her state sentence is completed.

Prosecutors and FBI agents accused Khonaizan and her husband, Homaidan Al-Turki, 37, both Saudi citizens, of hiding the woman’s passport and forcing her to care for their five children and cook and clean for the family in their suburban Aurora home for four years.

She slept on a mattress on the basement floor and was paid less than $2 a day, according to prosecution testimony during Khonaizan’s state trial.

Al-Turki was convicted by a state jury in June of 12 counts of unlawful sexual contact by use of force, threats or intimidation; false imprisonment; conspiracy to commit false imprisonment; criminal extortion; and theft. He faces eight years to life in prison for each of the sexual contact counts when he is sentenced Aug. 31.

Al-Turki also faces an October federal trial on charges of forced labor, document servitude and harboring an illegal immigrant. In April, he and Khonaizan agreed to pay the nanny about $64,000 in wages to settle a Labor Department lawsuit.

Al-Turki, a linguist, worked at a Denver publishing and translating company and was a doctoral candidate at the University of Colorado.

I have no pity for Mel what-so-ever. He was at 0.12; that's about a 4 beer buzz. Mel was not a raving drunk, he had a good buzz going and that's about it. He said what he said ... we do still have 1st Ammendment rights, right? I don't recall reading any conditions with regard to what I say (other than screaming 'Fire' in a crowded theater, or 'Bomb' in a Muslim pilgrimage).

No, my sarcasm is directed at the judge who thought 2 months was a fair sentence for a woman who was essentially kidnapped and forced into slavery for several years. I'd have simply assumed a sentence for an offense like this would be DECADES behind bars, not a couple months.

What's more; it's unclear whether this woman has an option of going to jail, or going back to Saudi (where real 'slavery' is not only accepted, but is encouraged). If I were King; the woman would get 20 years, then would be deported. But that's just the way I think.

"other than screaming 'Fire' in a crowded theater, or 'Bomb' in a Muslim pilgrimage"

Nothing necessarily illegal about that. There might be a fire in the crowded theater, and there is a notable statistical probability of a bomb in a Muslim pilgrimage... ;)

I didn't see the </ sarcasm> after your post...so am I to assume YOU consider the Saudi Sandnazis your "betters"?

I don't.
I consider any Koran adhering Muslim - my enemy.

I was just reading down and trying to remember the other saudi "princess!" bi-otch that did the same thing here in FL!

Thanks for the reminder of what these oil rich bastards are capable of and have done in the past.

I'm surprised the sentence for 4 years of slavery is only 2 months.

I'm becoming more and more of a fan of *an eye for an eye*. She should spend four years of her life in jail. No wonder she wants to be deported. Where she's from, it probably isn't a crime at all; no penalty of any kind. If she's so willing to be deported, why didn't she leave on her own earlier?

"I didn't see the </ sarcasm> after your post...so am I to assume YOU consider the Saudi Sandnazis your "betters"?"

I'd figured the sarcasm was pretty well implied..... ;)

"I consider any Koran adhering Muslim - my enemy."

There are quite a few people here who just consider it a misunderstood religion that should be accorded full 1st Amendment protection and our respect as a "great faith".... (cough)

It's not just the Koran, by the way. The worst stuff resides in the Hadiths.

At first I was gonna ping you on the pic in #32, then decided not to spam ya. Then I noticed the tshirt. I bet it is a Nokia shirt on the one burka'd beeahhch? Whatever it is, I bet it's a brand that Islam didn't invent and so the "all cultures are equal" irony was just too much for me not to share.

This slave was sexually assaulted by her master and is therefore guilty of adultery and should be stoned to death according to the religion of peace.
