Lebanese army and security officials said Tuesday night that a major IDF operation was underway against suspected Hizbullah positions near Baalbeek in eastern Lebanon's Bekaa Valley, with one officer saying the IAF presence in the air above the ancient city was "unprecedented."
The operation began with at least five rapid air strikes.
"The extreme, unprecedented number of aircraft indicates the possibility that the Israelis are planning to land troops, but we cannot yet confirm that," said one security official.
Flares held aloft by parachutes lighted the night sky to a daytime brilliance, the official said.
Hizbullah's al-Manar television said IAF helicopters were taking heavy guerrilla fire but had not landed any commandos.
Israeli helicopters also attacked a target 15 kilometers west of Baalbek, starting a huge fire, witnesses said.
Earlier Tuesday, the IAF struck three Hizbullah bunkers in the western zone of southern Lebanon.
Warplanes also hit Hizbullah fighters battling with soldiers near the border as the guerrillas fired mortars into Israel.
Yes, but they are between a rock and a hard place. The U.S. military whose enemies they have been supplying in Iraq, is just to the East and the IAF will not be gentle if they step in.
Baalbek, isn't that where they have that humungous piece of stone?
And that is where we want our enemies between a rock and a hard place. This was one reason among many why Bush invaded Iraq.
I am sure some soldiers see it as their first choice.
This 'plane' is more like a tank with jet engines.
And nightvision.
And bombs.
And missiles.
And rockets.
And can fly slow or fast.
Not to mention a 30mm 6400 rounds per minute gatling gun as big as a volkswagen. (and that's just the ammo case)
COMBAT MIX. I like that term.
Indeed? Reported by whom, exactly? I'm not saying your statement is bogus, but if it is accurate, then things are about to get really ugly, really quick. "Can you say Bye-bye, Damascus, one of the oldest, if not the oldest contiuously inhabited human cities on the face of the planet? I knew you could..."

Israeli Commandos Raid Hezbollah Hideout in Baalbek Hospital
Tuesday, August 01, 2006
BOURJ AL-MULOUK, Lebanon Israel poured up to 10,000 armored troops into south Lebanon Tuesday, and separately dropped helicopter-borne commandos deep into the eastern Bekaa Valley where they raided a Hezbollah-run hospital and fought pitched battles with guerrillas, in a major escalation of the three-week-old war.
After the raid on the ancient city of Baalbek ended, the Israeli military said it had captured some guerrillas and hit others. The military statement said all its soldiers returned unharmed to their base, but gave no further details.
The raid on Baalbek, once a Syrian army headquarters 80 miles north of Israel, was the deepest ground attack on Lebanon since fighting began 21 days ago.

Gosh...I don't remember...I've been reading so much since the Israel war started....I'll see if I can come up with it.
Thank you for your efforts in this research.
Heliopolis. City of the Sun. Or City of the Center of the world.
And probably devoted to worship of Baal.
hmmmmmmmmmmm.
(not intended to offend current Lebanese citizens. Only concerned with the history of the name of the town and it's relationship to Biblical names and places.)
How is it that two 'unseen' people with like-minds can agree with each other so perfectly across hundreds (or thousands) of miles of desolation? The magic of cyberspace strikes again! *BUMP*!
We do not go to war because we want war, but because we want peace and are willing to kill those who will not allow peace, or die trying.
It is not the Islamic religion. It is the mullahs and their need to retain their seats of power. It is the exploitation of the Islamic religion by ME nations to use for their own goals.
They convince their populace that the US and Israel are all to blame for the poorness and death in their countries.
Madmen are ruling countries in the ME and they believe in their own divinity.
This is the reason for the madness.
Sometime in the last few days I saw or read that a guy who was a former Southern Lebanese resident said that when Hezbollah came to town the built an arsenal, then built a school or hospital on top.
I think it was Jennifer Griffin interviewing a guy who fought with the Isrealis against Hezbollah until 6 years ago. When the Isrealis pulled out of Lebanon the guy had to move to Isreal and his house just got hit by a Hezbollah rocket.
...United Nations nuclear weapons monitors were quick to point out that these weapons date before the 1991 Persian Gulf War.
You mean the Dome of the Rock?
I knew I left my spaceship somewhere.

Here is the link for that post.
self ping.
Party of allah is the traditional translation, but remember that the term comes from the Quran, so we are not talking about a political party in the modern sense.
I guess therefore you could also translate it as soldiers of Allah.
Cheers.
