Syracuse University, along with Cornell University, Colgate University and Ithaca College, made the list of the 100 best campuses for LGBT students in a new book released today.
While anti-gay rights efforts have gained traction in many places, particularly in opposition to gay marriage, college campuses are widely embracing efforts to support the gay community.
To be considered for the guide, colleges had to be nominated by a current student. About 600 schools were in contention for the 100-best designation, said author Shane Windmeyer, who is the founder of Campus PrideNet, an online network that combats homophobia at colleges.
Campuses that made the list have made ongoing financial commitments to supporting gay students.
Cornell opened its LGBT Resource Center almost 12 years ago, and administrators make sure that, beginning with orientation, students know it exists, said Gwendolyn Dean, director of the center.
That sends an important message that LGBT people are included," Dean said. "LGBT people are used to various versions of the closet. This visibility we work so hard to maintain at Cornell directly speaks against that. We're very out front and accessible."
Ithaca College's LGBT center sponsors a film series every year and collaborates with students on other programs, such as a recent effort to explore the high rates of smoking in the gay community.
IC center coordinator Lisa Maurer thinks there will be a market for the new guide because she already hears from parents of gay high school students asking if their children would be safe or have leadership opportunities there.

What is really amazing is that Republicans and conservatives must remain underground. They are friendly only to those with whom they agree.
Great news for the Micheal Jackson's of the world. People who have their genitals mutilated I noticed are also considered normal now. When will the enlightened crowd be all inclusive and add the P (pedophile), B (beastophile), and I (incestophile), to the diverse mix?
...unfortunately, you have hit it right on the head.... I am an alumnus of one of those universities ("Go Orange...!") and for the past few years, whatever I get in the mail from their "development office" or whatever they call their financial operation that solicits alumni support, goes right into the trash.... it didn't used to be this way, years go when I attended S.U., but times change.... I can remember when being a queer was something to be ashamed of, not somthing to be proud of.....
It's only a matter of time before someone lists the top 100 beastiality-friendly colleges in the U.S. as well.
If they do, it's not helping much. Last I knew, Tompkins County's STD rates were still very high. Tompkins County, BTW, is where the City of Evil (aka Ithaca) is located.
I'm sure parents all over America a grateful for this warning.

Check out their manifesto, The 120 Days of Sodom, where the main characters are aptly described as being “…lawless and without religion, whom crime amused, and whose only interest lay in his passions, who heeded naught, had nothing to obey but the imperious decrees of his perfidious lusts.” (Sounds just like the kind of New Man that liberals want everybody to turn into, doesn't it?)
Would you expect such hedonists to be non-smoking salad eaters?

At last, colleges where "Homecoming Queen" has real meaning.
G-d help me, but when I saw Colgate, I immediately thought of all these folks brushing their teeth...
I'm ok with them having their own schools.....Can we get them their own water fountains, too?
