Fri 28 Jul 2006 Naked Scandinavians leave Albanian police speechless
TIRANA - Albanian police were speechless when around 30 Scandinavian women went topless, shocking local bathers and causing an uproar in an Albanian beach resort.
"Police only watched ... they could not approach the tourists because they spoke no English," a local newspaper in the southern Albania coastal town of Sarande said.
Albanian mothers dragged their children away and police received a barrage of complaints over the Scandinavian tourists.
The Scandinavians left after two hours when their guide was informed that nude bathing was banned on public beaches. Nudity and topless bathing are still taboo in the poor Balkan country.
"The Albanians are mostly non-denominational (70%)(the majority converted from catholicism to Islam as part of the Ottoman Empire's forced conversions of the Balkan people), one would argue that only 10% of Albanian population might be practicing Muslim, the other 60% non-denominational. There is evidence that an increasing number of people are converting back to the Catholicism. During the communist era religion was prohibited. The Albanian government proclaimed Albania the only officially Atheist country in the world. After the fall of the Communist Regime in 19891990, religions were reinstated. According to 1939 statistics, the Albanian Orthodox (20%) and Catholic Church (10%) would be the other main religions in Albania. 20% of the total Muslim population is Bektashi, a Turkish Shi'a Sufi sect that came to Albania through the Ottoman Janissaries. Religious fanaticism has never been a problem, with people from different religions living in peace and even inter-marrying.[citation needed]"
At least there isn't a religious angle to the demonstration.

It's perverted to look at topless Scandinavian women?
Un oh, I'm in trouble.
No excuse, you're fired!!
Not if you are a guy who simply appreciates fine Swedish/Danish/Norwegian craftsmanship.
Ahhh ZZZZZZ ZZZZZZ Top. Hi StJ. How are you and yours?
mit sarcasm
both = $$$$ tourism industry :)
In Europe, toplessness isn't some kind of scandal like it is here. Fact is, nude beaches are all over the place.
I remember going to a beach one time in Germany when I was there with the Army. I saw a sign that read "FKK". Since Germans are into acronyms, I didn't think anything of it...until I got there. These innocent American eyes hadn't seen ANYTHING like what I saw then!
After I'd related the story to a German friend, she informed me that "FKK" is the acronym for the German Nudist Club! Now I know.
Poor country indeed!
OMG you must be kidding - please give me a link to this
I am aware of this, but my comment was more directed at the Albanian officer who couldn't speak English--my thought would be he'd think "well, I can't speak Swedish/Dutch/etc." not "I can't speak English so it's hopeless." I've dated plenty of Swedes and Germans and, unless they're tired or drunk, they sound like mid-westerners.
Today, Albania is mostly secular, but the majority religion there is Islam. It used to Christian, but they were converted to Islam under the Ottoman Empire.
"Thank you...very nice...fantastic.." is pretty much universally understood.
FKK = Freikörperkultur
Wholy crap! I'm going to Sarande in two days, for two weeks. I should have booked for last week I guess.

Yes, that's it! By jove, you've got it!
It's not naked women, it's "craftsmanship"!! Yes, that's the story.

I know. I was an Army brat in Germany. Great beer and beautiful German girls, it was kinda heaven.
