almost 31 years ago for me ... took a long bus ride from Columbis SC to Parris Island, arriving in the middle of the hot August night with 90 degree temp and 100% humidity ... I knew I had arrived at Hell.

Try riding an amtrac after a greasy meal. Pukin became contagious. Got off the train in Sept. 54, to a whole new world, one I enjoyed so much that I stayed around till 76.

I went in the Corp when I was 17. The reason I ended up in the Marine Corp was because the Marine recruiter’s desk was closer to the door than the Navy recruiter. Didn't think my parents would sign and was told I had to have a signature. The Marine recruiter looked out the window and said, Isn't that your mother sitting in that car across the street?” Being kind of slow I said no, that’s not her. Well, he insisted until I finally caught on. Anyway, that lady signed the form and I was in. Thing were a little loose in the early 50's.

Got to Paris Island and had a Drill Instructor who was 6" shorter and probably 50 lbs. lighter than I was. He scared the devil out of me. At thump call, he showed a very strong right. All in all we had a pretty good platoon. Only made one trip to Ribbon Creek.

"Try riding an amtrac after a greasy meal"

Sounds like the old LVT with the twin Caddy engines. Vibration was unreal.

On that date in time, I was still in tech school. Little did I know that soon after graduation I would end up working at a defense plant in direct support of the Vietnam war.

It was 0200 hrs on 23 Oct. '75. (I went delay entry just to make sure I was ready). I was asleep when we arrived at Ft. Knox.

I was at Ft Knox in '69.Did you,by chance, run across SGT King,SSG Freuhauf (?spelling),First Sgt Gonsalves or Cpt Webber? (They may have gotten promotions before you got there).

I was Echo/13/4.....what were you?

Bravo 13/4, No mission too difficult, no sacrifice too great-Drill Sgt.!

DI Jones, was about 6'4" 265 lbs, DI Percival, and the meanest Filipino 1st Sgt in the whole Army. He was about 5'6" tall, weighed about 200 lbs, and had not a lick of fat on him.

5.56mm

I was a scribe for the entire cycle. It was a great job! I got to make the 3x5 cards the DIs had in their hats showing the day's schedule. So I always knew what was coming up (classroom test, extra long PT, etc) a few days prior. Also, if we were marching to a class and the DI dropped us for some diciplinary PT, I knew it wouldn't last very long because they HAD to have us in the classroom on time. Like I said, pretty neat job (also got me out of a lot of tedious details).
