LOS ANGELES (Reuters)-The U.S. government's crackdown on media indecency could prevent World War Two veterans from sharing their stories in an upcoming TV documentary series by Ken Burns, the head of the Public Broadcasting Service said on Wednesday.
Noted filmaker Burns' highly anticipated seven-part series "The War" features salty language used by servicemen and others. If the explecitives make it to air, they could lead to crippling fines for the offencing stations as a result of a new law signed last month by President George W. Bush.

Well, then they ought to sit down and listen to Jimmie Stewart or Audie Murphy or Glenn Ford or Eddie Arnold describe what they did so that 1st Graders can listen to it. If they were infantryman they no doubt squatted and s*&^ on the trail during patrols; we don't need a demonstration on prime time TV.

Exactly! War sucks. Men swear while risking their lives in the military. Sanitizing warfare does nobody any good. We need to know the reality of fighting for just causes.
Frankly, if I had children young enough not to have already been exposed to curse words, I would consider them too young to watch a documentary about warfare. If they were old enough to watch such a documentary, I would assume that those words were familiar to them from the schoolyard.
The nanny folks who think that everything on television should resemble a 1950s sitcom need to rethink their position. Sometimes, accurate representations of historical events are ugly.

Actually, "tits" is a regional pronunciation of "teats," and originated in England. It got its spelling from years of pronunciation.
Even today, if you ask people in various parts of the English speaking world to pronounce "teats," some will pronounce it as "teets" and others will pronounce it as "tits."

For some squeamish folks, it's better if they change the word. It makes what's happening a bit more palatable, I suppose.
I remember the debate here about "A Band of Brothers," an outstanding film that didn't mince words at all. Many people were shocked by that film. I mean, guys had their guts blown out on screen. Surely that never really happened, right?
Those who would censor the actual words of our brave soldiers are out of touch with reality. They don't like the fact that war is an ugly thing, and would prefer the John Wayne image of the soldier, triumphant in battle.
War should not be romanticized. Ever. To do that is to insult the brave men and women who have died in our military.
I disagree. I am a believer in the free market and supply side economics, Thomas Sowell is my guru, but I do not believe it would work out that way with network television.
I admint this is just my opinion. I do not trust them to police themselves or even to have the market police it for them. Money is more important to them than moral prudence. Sure, there are people who would complain and boycott the advertisers, but I think we are reaching limits on that. It is the fatigue factor. People just give up fighting, even if they oppose it.

I believe the correct spelling for what's on a farm animal was spelled "teats".
The fact that you would let your children watch graphic images of war but not expose them to what you deem an offensive word disturbs me. They're just words for F#$%'s sake.
Well, I can always count on learning something from Free Republic. In my post I spelled it "teets" thinking this would leave no doubt about how the Aggie guy pronounced a word in a way I had never heard in my life before. Henceforth that will be my way too (for animals only, of course). LOL
