Moscow's $1 billion sale of top-flight military aircraft to Venezuela's erratic dictator isn't just business. It's unfriendly to the U.S. and a sign of a revived Cold War. ...
His latest recruit was Belarus, where he signed an "anti-U.S. pact" Monday with this Russian satellite, praising Belarusian dictator Alexander Lukashenko, who admits to having a soft spot for Stalin. "Our countries must keep their hands at the ready on the sword," Chavez said. ...
There isn't any doubt Russia's $1 billion contract to sell Venezuela 30 Sukhoi jet aircraft and 33 helicopters will be trouble. ...
All are perfect for internal repression against dissent and against "color revolutions" (read: the Orange, Denim, and probable future Venezuelan and Cuban colored-coded democratic revolutions), the very idea of which Chavez slammed in Belarus this week. ...
Why Russian President Vladimir Putin would do this to us, given all the considerations the G-8, the West, and the U.S. have shown to Russia in the wake of its transition from communism leaves us aghast, and ought to change our perceptions....
But Putin also seeks to project Russia's power, and he resents the growing democracy movements on Russia's periphery in U.S.-supported countries like Georgia, Ukraine and Belarus just as Russia cracks down.
His move to sell advanced military aircraft to Venezuela on our periphery is a message to Washington to stop supporting democracy revolutions, or he'll retaliate, using dodgy actors like Chavez, whom Putin's spokesman yesterday called "a key partner." It's a dangerous trend.
"He's building a nuclear reactor for Iran," said Katzman. "Do you think he is going to stop at fighter planes for Venezuela?" We wonder the same thing.

HAHAHAHHAHA...yeah....the "AXIS of Military Incompetence"
Russia hasnt been able to project power into this Hemisphere for twenty years.
And Chavez...hahahhhaha...that guy lives in a box, it take more then weapons to fight.
It may have something to do with the expansion of NATO and the overtures we make to nations on the borders of russia. It's foolish to think they wouldn't counter such moves. As far as the US having anything to fear from these tin horn 3rd world fools that like to shoot their mouths off, let them spend there money.
What a bunch of Russophobic nonsense. It's simply business, that's all. If the US can sell F-16s to countries on Russia's border like Poland, then Russia can sell Su-30s to Venezuela.
The same goes for China.
This country is seen, rightly or wrongly,as a country in decline...economically,politically and militarily. There are very, very few countries today who admire us *or* fear us.
Regardless of whether this belief is true or not,the very fact that it's as widespread as it is will make for some very, very rough sledding for this country over the next 25+ years.
Russia knows that Poland doesn't represent the slightest threat to world peace, regional peace or the foundations of current economic stability.
Chavez has,in the very clearest of ways, indicated that he's willing to threaten all these things.
With that reasoning, if Russia/China can lend a hand building nuke reactors in Iran, than the U.S. can help Israel enriching uranium. WFTA-world fair trade agreement?
Q: "Why Russian President Vladimir Putin would do this?"
A: "$1 billion"
So the dictators of the world are coalescing into a coordinated movement to undermine the West and the spread of capitalism and individual liberty. Putin, Lukashenko, Chavez, and Ahmadinejad are assisting one another-- knowing that they will not be able to survive on their own.
This is further proof, of course, that Putin deserves to be classified among the dictators of the world.

Oh,c'mon. You *can't* be serious.Yes,there's no love lost between Poland and Russia but Poland would act on it *only* if they got their own little psychopath in charge,as Venezuela,North Korea,Iran and other countries now have.
Relax a little. Putin is a business man. he has stuff to sell and Chavez is stupid enough to believe the hype and buy it.

So typical, bringing a knife to a gun fight.
I'm sad to say, but the frendship was Russia's to lose, not ours...
