UN Secretary General Kofi Annan today said he was "shocked" at Israel's "apparently deliberate targeting" of a UN post in Lebanon, in which up to four UN observers were killed.
Mr Annan described the strike as a "co-ordinated artillery and aerial attack on a long established and clearly marked UN post."
He said it took place "despite personal assurances given to me by Prime Minister Ehud Olmert that UN positions would be spared Israeli fire."
"Furthermore, General Alain Pelligrini, the UN Force Commander in south Lebanon, had been in repeated contact with Israeli officers throughout the day on Tuesday, stressing the need to protect that particular UN position from attack.
"I call on the Government of Israel to conduct a full investigation into this very disturbing incident and demand that any further attack on UN positions and personnel must stop.
"The names and nationalities of those killed are being withheld pending notification of their families. I extend sincere condolences to the families of our fallen peacekeepers."
Either the Hezzies were tucked up tight against it and firing, or, it was a position the Israeli's really wanted. Since it has been destroyed I'm guessing the U.N. will evacuate it and the Israeli's will move in.
This could have been a Fort Sumter kind of moment. However, without the risk of getting your ass kicked.
Wow ... sorry Kofi ... If Israel wanted to kill UN peacekeepers they would have killed alot more than 2
Genghis Kahn told him at the Kerry Briefing...
I thought this man at least pretended to be a professional.
he vying for a job as al Qaeda spokesman when his term is up in a few months... trying to improve his anti-israel / anti-US bonifides
He's only shocked that Israel discovered these U.N. rats were communicating troop movements and strength to Hezbolla.
These guys are from the same UN bunch who were 300 to 400 yards from the Israelis who were ambushed/kidnapped. Why does it seem reasonable that the dead UN guys were also close enough to collaborate with the terrorists and that's why they were in the line of fire.
Don't be too upset Kofi, they never saw it coming so they didn't suffer. Those "observers" were too busy looking up little girls skirts or looking for bribes. Kofi if you need to express your grief to someone, please express it in the space provided here------->[ ]
Suddenly I remember that the IDF had been telling EVERYONE to get out of S. Lebanon if they wanted to avoid attack. Could it be that the Israelis told the UN to get out, they said screw you, you won't shoot me, and the Israelis went ahead and reduced the target? Then Annan says well they did it on purpose, neglecting to mention that they were warned to get out. It's plausible.
I believe Israel will do fine herself. our task is to occupy the position we now hold, and make the region off limits to Russia and China. India will keep Pakistan in check. We need to sit this one out, IMNSHO.
Semper Fidelis
Do you have a scintilla of evidence for that, or are you simply making things up to justify the killing of soldiers from Austria, Canada, China, and Finland who were simply manning the post to which they were assigned?
It's a stronger inference to make than what Kofi Annon is alleging.
Never mind, I know the answer, it's so that the left wing loon media in America and the jihadist loon media in the Middle East will like them more!
FYI to all
Today the UNFIL forces were REPAIRING roads bombed by the IDF.
Additionally UN forces have been shot at repeatedly on purpose in the last few days.
Don't believe me? Read the UN's own report
http://www.un.org/Depts/dpko/missions/unifil/pr09.pdf
UNIFIL is still facing serious restrictions in its freedom of movement due to the ongoing hostilities and the extensive destruction of roads and bridges throughout the area of operation. Yesterday, a UNIFIL engineering contingent from China managed to do some repairs on a key road artery between Tyre and Naqoura, and the road is now usable for traffic. However, more road destruction was reported in various areas in the south.
then let israel make that claim, there is nothing stopping them from saying they took it out for that reason.
That's according to the ongoing account in The Jerusalem Post. (www.jpost.com)
Not sure of the relevance, if any. They shouldn't have been there in the first place.
While I expect, if you reply at all, that you'll come back with allegations relating to what you think some others may have done at some other time, let me tell you up front that such claims will not answer the question. It was alleged that this post was a Hezballah communications post. You indicated that it can be inferred as such. Tell us all your evidence for making that inference.
I'm sure I'll be waiting a while.
The Israelis have expressed their deep regret over these deaths. It is a shame that so few here have that much class.
