Interesting.
I suspected that there was more to this than the story indicated.
TY for the added info!

"And still people (loose term there) discuss it as though it were really happening spontaneously." Yeah in season two when Mike took a header in the fire and he burnt his hands so bad the skin come off his fingers, I turned to my wife and said: "Wow they can get these guys to do anything for ratings."

Hey, sometimes accidents happen and that makes for "great" TV too.

When your income jumps extraordinarily in any year it is mightly to your advantage to pay the extra tax on time, use a paper return, and keep an exact copy. The whole goal is to make sure the only thing you get burned for is the huge tax on that year's income, and nothing else.
To: MplsSteve
Wonder if he'll walk around the prison naked?
To: MplsSteve
I remember something about some bogus charity he made up. He was having the radio station pay him through the charity. Nothing but a flim-flam man.
To: libstripper
Well put.
From what it sounds like (from other posters), not paying taxes from his Survivor winnings was only the tip of the iceberg.
To: MplsSteve
My Opinion? The guy is a sick freak, who probably wanted to go to jail for some lovin'.

Interesting. It kinda sounds to me like Hatch tried to avoid paying taxes...period!
Why else would a person be sentenced to jail, right? Let's say he made an honest mistake and neglected to report his winnings.
The IRS would then say "OK, Mr. Hatch. You owe us $xxxxxxx amount of dollars. That includes penalties and interest".
You'd think Hatch would say "Jeez, I screwed up big! I'll settle with you now in order to avoid future problems".
Opinions or comments - anyone?
Court ruling on Richard Hatch from www.thesmokinggun.com
I'm normally not sympathetic to the IRS, but the case is extremely clear. He basically did not file two legitimately done tax returns, and DID file one based on him not winning the dough, which the accountant would not sign. He also pretended that a private corp. he owned was a charity.
I want to know what this guy did with the money. Did it all go up his nose?!

Yes. He was permanently "stuck on stupid."

WOW & OMG!! This guy begged them to indict him and send him to prison and got just what he asked for.
