Interesting. It kinda sounds to me like Hatch tried to avoid paying taxes...period!

Why else would a person be sentenced to jail, right? Let's say he made an honest mistake and neglected to report his winnings.

The IRS would then say "OK, Mr. Hatch. You owe us $xxxxxxx amount of dollars. That includes penalties and interest".

You'd think Hatch would say "Jeez, I screwed up big! I'll settle with you now in order to avoid future problems".

Opinions or comments - anyone?

Since he's proudly gay, I imagine he'll arrive with a few cases of soap bars to drop himself.

The trial judge said that Hatch lied repeatedly on the witness stand. Whatever he did, he really teed off the judge!

Hatch not only didn't pay any taxes on his Survivor winnings, he also paid no taxes on 350K he made as a radio host and he did not pay taxes on income from a rental property he owned.

IRS and the Feds told him that if he pled guilty to filing a false return, he would get probation and have to pay restitution with late penalties.

He refused the deal and insisted on going to trial, claiming that CBS verbally instructed him that they would pay his taxes. He didn't say if CBS told him years before they hired him that they would pay taxes on his rental property as well.

This ridiculous story was as unconvincing in court as it seems in writing and he got hard time.

Tax Evasion is normally hard to prove. There has to be criminal intent to evade taxation and not just an error, misunderstanding, or other honest or semi-honest mistake. Proving that intent isn't easy, but this moron obviously provided all of the proof they needed.

They should lock up the people who think this show has any basis in reality. It is so thoroughly scripted it's ludicrous. And still people (loose term there) discuss it as though it were really happening spontaneously.

Having said all that, I hope this guy serves as long a sentence as possible.
