Blame the terrorists, not Israel
Boston Globe ^ | July 24, 2006 | Alan M. Dershowitz

Posted on 07/24/2006 7:35:26 AM PDT by bnelson44

THE HEZBOLLAH and Hamas provocations against Israel once again demonstrate how terrorists can exploit human rights and the media in their attacks on democracies. By hiding behind their own civilians, the Islamic radicals issue a challenge to democracies: Either violate your own morality by coming after us and inevitably killing some innocent civilians, or maintain your morality and leave us with a free hand to target your innocent civilians. This challenge presents democracies such as Israel with a lose-lose option and terrorists with a win-win option.

There is one variable that could change this dynamic and present democracies with a viable option that could make terrorism less attractive as a tactic: The international community, the anti-Israel segment of the media, and human rights organizations should stop falling for this gambit and acknowledge that they are being used to promote the terrorist agenda. Whenever a democracy is presented with the lose-lose option and chooses to defend its citizens by going after the terrorists who are hiding among civilians, this trio of predictable condemners can be counted on by the terrorists to accuse the democracy of ``overreaction," ``disproportionality," and ``violations of human rights." In doing so, they play into the hands of the terrorists and cause more terrorism and more civilian casualties on both sides.

If instead this trio could, for once, be counted on to blame the terrorists for the civilian deaths on both sides, this tactic would no longer be a win-win situation for the terrorists.

Now we just need them to apply that concept to Bin Laden and Islamic Jihadists on OUR behalf...and we've got a full fledged recovery program on our hands, people!

"What would Israeli critics regard as ``proportioned" to a chemical or biological attack?"

Forget Chem-Bio, the question is: Are Hezbollah rockets still raining from the sky onto Israel?  If the answer is yes then the attack is not disproportionate.

After picking myself off the floor after reading the headline, I recovered enough to notice it was by Dershowitz. He's jewish and has written books (The Case for Israel) pro-Israel.

'Another leftist/liberal mugged by reality."

While I certainly don't expect Dershowitz to become a card carrying Republican, it is nice to see an uber-liberal think rationally again.

He's right, but it's not a segment of the media, it's 95% of the media. And why didn't he mention the UN, and Leftists in general?

"This challenge presents democracies such as Israel with a lose-lose option and terrorists with a win-win option."

In the days of yore (i.e., not too long ago) that may have been the case but most rational people are just plain sick and tired of watching terrorists kill innocent people in the name of their "struggle."

This whole "jihad" crap is a farce and whatever it takes to squish the life out of it, then so be, and let's do it!

They act rational when they cannot find a way to put Bush into the middle of their rant. It's been a struggle for the MSM to cover the current events of Israel not having the Bush-crutch to cling onto.

It seems that Liberals want to hold idiots harmless for being idiots. Hexbullies hiding among civilians that end complain about casualty rates of their human shields are like people who are perpetually on welfare whining about hard their lots are in life. And the Liberals back them up each step of the way.

I was waiting for Arafat to pronounce at the UN, "The Palestinian People have always wanted their own state -- and we pick Rhode Island."

Democrats are taking up the issue. They are going to place themselves on the side of Israel until it looks like Israel will struggle.

Then they will blame Bush.

If instead this trio could, for once, be counted on to blame the terrorists for the civilian deaths on both sides, this tactic would no longer be a win-win situation for the terrorists...

...It should be obvious by now that Hezbollah and Hamas actually want the Israeli military to kill as many Lebanese and Palestinian civilians as possible. That is why they store their rockets underneath the beds of civilians...

...Israel has every self-interest in minimizing civilian casualties, whereas the terrorists have every self-interest in maximizing them -- on both sides. Israel should not be condemned for doing what every democracy would and should do: taking every reasonable military step to stop the killing of their own civilians...

...What would Israeli critics regard as ``proportioned" to a chemical or biological attack? What would they say if Israel tried to preempt such an attack and, in the process, killed some civilians? Must a democracy absorb a first strike from a weapon of mass destruction before it fights back?

Moral Clarity BUMP !

This ping list is not author-specific for articles I'd like to share. Some for the perfect moral clarity, some for provocative thoughts; or simply interesting articles I'd hate to miss myself. (I don't have to agree with the author all 100% to feel the need to share an article.) I will try not to abuse the ping list and not to annoy you too much, but on some days there is more of the good stuff that is worthy of attention. You can see the list of articles I pinged to lately  on  my page.
You are welcome in or out, just freepmail me (and note which PING list you are talking about). Besides this one, I keep 2 separate PING lists for my favorite authors Victor Davis Hanson and Orson Scott Card.

I do not think this presents a civilized nation with a lose/lose situation. The obvious choice is to kill the civilians of the country that allows terrorists to live and operate among them. The only other choice is to be perpetual victims until you are all dead. Killing them instead of letting them kill you is a win/win situation.

If countries would stand strong and do this, soon there would be no terrorists hiding among civilians, civilians will turn them out, it has already started in Iraq and will continue to grow.

People get tired of being killed for someone else.

Does Israel have a COBRA gunship? If not, the US should offer them one, like the Lend-Lease program of American ships for Britain in WW II (when Britain was in full fight, but before Pearl Harbor when the US was brought in).

Why to I make that suggestion? I just heard another TV report that Hezbollah has about three minutes from when they fire a rocket into Israel before Israeli jets can lay munitions on the spot from which the rocket was fired. That gives the terrorists the opportunity to "shoot and scoot."

However, the COBRA gunship can lay a wall of lead on the site of a rocket firing in seconds, not minutes. So it would no longer be "shoot and scoot," but "shoot and die." That would wipe out not only some terrorists, but also their rocket launchers.

It would be a version of the motto of the snipers, "One shot, one kill." Makes sense to me.

There isn't much doubt...the Palestinians and Lebanese people are worthless in the eyes of Hezballah and Hamas. It gets more media eyes on Isreal as you kill each non-Hamas/Hezballah dude. Its a no-win situation for the Isreali Army...other than getting the 3 troops back...there is nothing to gain. The fact that these missiles now exist....mean you can't trust the Lebanese government to monitor the situation anymore.
