Found it ... Check the 2003 FBI statistical report "Law Enforcement Officers Killed and Assaulted" available at http://www.fbi.gov/ucr/killed/leoka03.pdf

Table 24 from the report shows that the 425 number is the total for all officers killed by handguns (of all types and all calibres) during the period 1994-2003.

Typical totally bogus report from the DA.

Then, if you look at Table 30 in the report, you see a breakdown by caliber and firearm type (pistol, rifle, shotgun). For 5.7 it shows a total of .... zero. In fact, 9 mm accounts for about 30% of the total deaths.

Gee! My old 30-30 Winchester will do that. I guess I had better turn it in to to the police department to be melted. Only then, will I be free of that "cop killer."

I think everyone should get rid of thier "cop killer" hunting rifles so that we all can be safe. />grins.

NY DA Richard Brown is either a liar or a fool and quite possibly both plain and simple.

If I hot load 135gr FMJ in my 10mm Witness, it chronos at 1700 fps. Which will go right through a class III/a vest like it wasn't even there.

Any Magnum class pistol will defeat common soft body armor worn by most law enforcement. ANY rifle round over a .22 LR will do the same. Most hunting caliber rounds will even defeat a class IIa trauma plate.

It isn't the round that is the "cop killer", it's the person behind the trigger.

It's my understanding that the round that is capable of penetrating soft armor is outlawed.
The available round will not do it.

"Since 1994, 425 of the 616 police officers killed in the line of duty have been killed with a FN 5.7, the DA said."

Where did you see that? I read the source article and did not see it.

What I read was this: ...a powerful type of handgun that has been responsible for more than two-thirds of police officer deaths since 1994...

This statement is what I call a true lie, i.e., it is technically accurate, but carefully crafted to make you think it says something other than what it actually says.

In all probability, two-thirds of police officers killed in the line of duty are killed with a semi-automatic handgun (ten to fifteen per cent of the time with their own duty arm), which is all the statement actually says. You are led to believe, however, that the FN 5.7 is what they are talking about.

The gun-grabbers are clever, and not above lying outright, but will often cover themselves with a clever, but purposefully misleading, statement like the one in this article.

Watch out for these true lies.

Sounds like the same cop who said he was tired of burying police killed by drug dealers with Uzis.

At that time only ONE policeman had been killed by a drug user with a uzi and that was in Puerto Rico.

Do you think it's worth the time to send this guy the facts? Or will the truth just get in the way of a "good" story?

"The FN 5.7 is a lethal handgun imported from Belgium and capable of easily penetrating most police vets and plates.

The perp must have one hell of a strong throw. MY Sig can travel up to 50 fps after I've had my Wheaties, and can penetrate three pieces of cardboard.

Series, where do they get these writers?

I suppose it can't hurt. Reporters should take an interest in getting facts right, and this is totally wrong information.

I'll send him a short message.

after a search of their home yielded a powerful type of handgun that has been responsible for more than two-thirds of police officer deaths since 1994

Really? These types of guns, on their own, decide to get up, find police and kill them? Wow...whoda thunkit?

This is the mindset of the liberal socialists that want to run our country. They truly believe that by simply taking the guns, that violent deaths will disappear. Ask England. The bad guys, that are STILL bad guys, switched to other weapons, such as knives. Now (believe it or not), they are really, truly thinking of outlawing knives.

Pretty soon, the brits will start clubbing each other over the head, and they will ban clubs and baseball bats.

After that, when the bad guys (that are STILL bad guys) will start strangling people with lawn hoses. Not to be out-maneuvered, the Brits will ban hoses AND gardens.

After that, when the bad guys (much to the dismay of the socialists, are STILL intent on killing) start killing people by strangulation, they will outlaw hands. EVERYBODY's hands.

Finally, they will no longer be anymore laws, since they can't be written or typed.

sorry, I got carried away there....

You must have missed it. It's in the source article when I look. Of course the reporter failed to check on such an outrageous claim as it supports his beliefs/agenda.

It is BS. The FN 5.7 hasn't even been around that long, to the best of my knowledge. Gangbangers are going to want 9's or .40 S&W's, or just whatever they can get (.38 revolver, for one example).

The DA who said this is either an idiot or a liar, and either issue should result in his immediate removal from office. Unfortunately, in our modern era, the people who are responsible for administering justice are frequently guilty of violating that trust.

That was my thought as well. I bet his data turns out to be bogus. That's what you happens when you rely on the Brady Campaign for your statistics - they're made up.

Post of the day! Every so often someone writes a line that cuts through all the BS and nails it perfectly.

OK, I sent the following E-mail message to him:

Police Confiscate 'cop killer' Gun in Far Rockaway by Stephen Stirling (internet version at http://www.timesledger.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=16952861&BRD=2676&PAG=461&dept_id=573700&rfi=6)

Mr. Stirling:

Your article states "[S]ince 1994, 425 of the 616 police officers killed in the line of duty have been killed with a FN 5.7, the DA said."

There's something wrong with this statement. Either the DA is misquoted or he quoted correctly but is seriously misinformed.

The FBI's annual "Law Enforcement Officers Killed and Assaulted" study for 2003, available at http://www.fbi.gov/ucr/killed/leoka03.pdf, shows that the total number of law enforcement officers killed by handguns of all calibers for the period 1994-2003 is 425. (Table 24). In fact, the report tabulates deaths by type of firearm (rifle, pistol, shotgun) and by caliber within each type at Table 30. Of the 425 officers killed by handguns between 1994 and 2003 exactly zero are shown to have died from the FN 5.7 caliber. Table 30 shows no entries for 5.7 mm.

To those of us involved in shooting sports, this is a serious error and deserves to be corrected.

Good letter - thanks. As you are obviously much more knowledgeable on the subject, it's better that you sent it than me. (I would have just been copying the information you researched.) If you don't mind, I'd be interested to know if you get a response.
