OK, I sent the following E-mail message to him:
Police Confiscate 'cop killer' Gun in Far Rockaway by Stephen Stirling (internet version at http://www.timesledger.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=16952861&BRD=2676&PAG=461&dept_id=573700&rfi=6)
Mr. Stirling:
Your article states "[S]ince 1994, 425 of the 616 police officers killed in the line of duty have been killed with a FN 5.7, the DA said."
There's something wrong with this statement. Either the DA is misquoted or he quoted correctly but is seriously misinformed.
The FBI's annual "Law Enforcement Officers Killed and Assaulted" study for 2003, available at http://www.fbi.gov/ucr/killed/leoka03.pdf, shows that the total number of law enforcement officers killed by handguns of all calibers for the period 1994-2003 is 425. (Table 24). In fact, the report tabulates deaths by type of firearm (rifle, pistol, shotgun) and by caliber within each type at Table 30. Of the 425 officers killed by handguns between 1994 and 2003 exactly zero are shown to have died from the FN 5.7 caliber. Table 30 shows no entries for 5.7 mm.
To those of us involved in shooting sports, this is a serious error and deserves to be corrected.

Good letter - thanks. As you are obviously much more knowledgeable on the subject, it's better that you sent it than me. (I would have just been copying the information you researched.) If you don't mind, I'd be interested to know if you get a response.
Check out tables 34 and 35 in the same document.

Law Enforcement Officers Feloniously Killed with Firearms
Point of Entry for Torso Wounds and Use of Body Armor, 1994-2003
