U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on Friday dismissed growing pressure for an immediate cease-fire between Israel and Hezbollah guerillas in Lebanon, calling it a "false promise" if the root causes of the conflict are not addressed.
"An immediate cease-fire without political conditions does not make sense," she told reporters at the State Department.
Rice will arrive for a brief visit to Israel on Monday, during which she is expected to receive an updated synopsis of the Israel Defense Forces' offensive in Lebanon.
"Syria knows what it needs to do and Hezbollah is the source of the problem," Rice said as she outlined U.S. hopes for a diplomatic solution to the current crisis.

Those who want an "immediate cease fire", really want to protect Hezbolla. Forget that crap. Move forward Isreal! We support what you're doing!
While Rice cites some logic, the solution is not negotiation. As we have learned by watching 40 years of wasted lives, money and effort. Until the terrorists are wiped from the face of the earth, will this ever end. Israel has gone way beyond the extra mile, and the scumbag terrorists, along with their promoters, and bent on doing nothing but killing Jews, no matter what.
The situation must be addressed with those REALITIES in mind. Israel knows that. Good for them and God's speed.
Root Cause; descendants of nazis we neglected to kill during WWII.
I disagree; the "root cause" is radical Islam (otherwise known as Islamofascism).
I like Rice. No truce until we've addressed root causes. We could spend months talking about root causes, studying root causes, meditating on root causes, defining measuring and quantifying root causes, and all the while the IDF keeps on taking care of business.
I assume those boats will be flying white flags?
I'm still trying to figure out which part of islam isn't radical.
LOL, I love that one. Maybe we could even have a Congressional debate on the political merits of studying root causes. Heck, we could even have a national debate on the definition of root causes.
Cease fire for Muslims means time to regroup, recruit and rearm..
The first sensible use of the term 'root causes' I have ever heard. The root cause of violence in the middle east is barbarians with missles living on Israel's border and the barbarians in the nation-states who aid and abet them.
Woohoo! Condi "I've never met a Jew-killing terrorist I didn't love" Rice wants a 'cease-fire' that addresses the 'root-causes' of the conflict.
Hmmm...
So, when Hizbollah says that the root-cause is the existance of Jews in the Holy Land, Rice will work for a 'cease-fire' that will 'address' it.
Oh, wait, I forget that Rice hasn't yet met a Jew-killing terrorist that she didn't love.
No wonder she fits in so well at the State Department. Peas in a pod and all that.
Before I left Beirut, most of the Lebanese with whom I was working (Sunnis, Shias, Maronites and Druze alike) said that they hoped their losses would not be in vain, that Israel would break the back of Hizbollah. A cease-fire would ensure that Hizbollah survives.
Dumbest post of the day. Bar none.
The U.S. got it exactly correct. On top of that, the U.S. is expediting bunker busting smart bombs to Isreal so they can root out HezEbola
Care to elaborate as to what Condi Rice wanted Israel to do in regards to Hamas shortly after the Palisimian 'elections'?
Or the last time there was a Hizbollah attack on Israel?
I remember... Do YOU?
Be Seeing You,
Chris
The root cause of the Arab-Jewish hatred goes back to the time of Abraham, when he had a son by the Egyptian girl, Hagar. God promised a son to Abraham and Sarah, and Abraham thought that since Sarah was barren that Hagar might do.
Ishamael was not what God had in mind when he promised a son to Abraham and Sarah, and the children of Ishamael have been sick with jealousy and hatred ever since. They have been taught a hatred that consumes them. This is the root problem of this war in the Middle East.
