Seems that I recall a similar strategy being attempted in the War of Northern Aggression. I think there was a movie that included the botched strategy. If memory serves me correctly the North was attempting it against a Southern Fort. It had disastrous consequeces for the North.

Oh yes, now I remember, the movie was "Cold Mountain."
