ROME - Hezbollah has created a "state within a state" in Lebanon and must be disarmed, Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad Siniora said in an interview published Thursday in an Italian daily.

Siniora told Milan-based newspaper Corriere della Sera that the Shi'ite militia has been doing the bidding of Syria and Iran, and that it can only be disarmed with the help of the international community and once a cease-fire has been achieved in the current Middle East fighting.

"It's not a mystery that Hezbollah answers to the political agendas of Tehran and Damascus," Siniora was quoted as saying by Corriere. "The entire world must help us disarm Hezbollah. But first we need to reach a cease-fire."

There are no comments about how Israel has been affected, but then again, this isn't an article about how Israel has been affected.

Hard not to note that Chirac is rushing in with aid.

"The entire world must help us disarm Hezbollah. But first we need to reach a cease-fire."

Given that Israel has been disarming them quite well for the last week, I'd say a cease-fire would not be as useful as joining the party.

Accurate and way too late for the good of Lebanon. I can only assume this "leader" was too weak and scared or left it was not in his interests to make such a request before Israel took casulaties and began the obvious of doing what no one else would to "disarm" Hezbollah. Givent hese terrorists stated doctrine, one can only disarm them buy killing htem.

They have made it clear they will be back doing this again if alive.

He's right and we all know that. My prayers for the peoples of Israel and Lebanon.

It's heart wrenching to see any civilians caught in the middle of this. Let the cowardly Hezzies come out from in back of their human shields and fight. It is beyond me that anyone considers joining their ranks. They are despicable.

But first we need to reach a cease-fire."

Cart before horse - you've had years, along with the UN, to 'disarm' Hezbolla.

That scenario doesn't work. Now get out of the way...

I'm with you pal. Israel seems to be doing a great job of disarming Hezbollah. If this leader of Syria is serious he would be thanking them and making guarantees that when Hezbollah is done he will not let them return.

Really, I read it was only 10,000, and that half of this number were sympathetic to Hezbollah. Granted, my source wasn't exactly reliable...

I heard that number(50,000) bandied about yesterday... can't verify its authenticity.
