Don't you mean that the President knew that it WOULD NOT be overridden?

Shrubbie, You're doin' a heck of a job!

Why don't you just call him Chimpy, and let us all know how you really feel?

"Way to go. Bush goes against the majority of Congress and 70% of American people to push his personal religious point of view"

Sorry no BushBot here, and I'm hardly religious, but destroying human life goes beyond religion. Seems it more simple, Right vs Wrong. It isn't as though the fricking Gov. is the only one whom has money to support this research. (Let alone the rest of the world)

Ask the Government that experiences pain at a cut in the rate of growth.

Maybe I am confused, but it does not seem to be a sanctity problem. It seems to be a scientif endeavor to find ways to delay, or defeat death and aging. I do not support abortion, but what this is about is money, anyway.

Yes, I like Roberts and Alito. The War on Terror is also a war on rights and privacy, as well (but that is for another argument. I am not a DUmmy. (when was the last time you saw a need to suspend the basic right of habeus corpus?)

I voted twice for GWB. I voted twice for his dad. I even voted for an old war horse against Slick. But, I no longer send money to the pubbies, since way too many have gone to the dark side! I am against abortion MURDER for any reason.

I am a Christian. I think I have a grasp of the theology. Please show me any Scripture which would forbid the use of embryonic tissue to benefit man. I can't seem to find one.

Do you have a list of those who voted against?

You have to wonder what makes people throw their morals out the window for an unproven area of medical research, especially when a successful, moral alternative is available. It's like some kind of religion.

Of course, a lot of normally sane people believe in man made global warming.

And this sort of this is why I voted for Mr. Bush (rather than merely voting against Messrs. Gore and Kerry). This sort of thing is why I WILL NOT vote for any candidate in the next presidential election who does not hold a reasonable and believable pro-life position.

Wow, I AM surprised. Good thing I'm already sitting down. Probably an indicator of the strong religious base that exists here in OH on both sides of the aisle. In the short time I've been here (a little more than two years), that's one thing I've noticed about most Ohioans.

Just curious.

But that's the thing - in the scenario you described, we DID do something. A second life was formed. There's no going back, at that point.

OK. Then suppose we split off a cell at a later stage. Is a human life still formed?

Dear Blackirish,

I take it that post #41 is tongue in cheek.

You can't say an embryo is not a human being because it doesn't look like us.

Children don't look like grownups. Babies don't look like older children. Infants don't look like older babies. Six-month fetuses don't look like infants. Embryos don't look like fetuses.

They are all complete human beings.

But we have a bunch of brainwashed fools who let their religion rule their lives.

Yeah ... like this rabid, brainwashed fool:

Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports. In vain would that man claim the tribute of patriotism who should labor to subvert these great pillars of human happiness -- these firmest props of the duties of men and citizens. The mere politician, equally with the pious man, ought to respect and to cherish them. A volume could not trace all their connections with private and public felicity.

Let it simply be asked, Where is the security for property, for reputation, for life, if the sense of religious obligation desert the oaths which are the instruments of investigation in courts of justice? And let us with caution indulge the supposition that morality can be maintained without religion. Whatever may be conceded to the influence of refined education on minds of peculiar structure, reason and experience both forbid us to expect that national morality can prevail in exclusion of religious principle.

It is substantially true that virtue or morality is a necessary spring of popular government. The rule indeed extends with more or less force to every species of free government. Who that is a sincere friend to it can look with indifference upon attempts to shake the foundation of the fabric?

(George Washington's Farewell Address)

So let me get this straight:

Brazen nanny-state socialism gets a pass time and again for years, but he decides to whip out the veto pen to make an arguably pointless (and kind of stupid) ideological statement?

Embryonic stem cell research will never put this country in jeopardy, but big government socialism most certainly will. It is nice to see the President using his veto power to look after the long-term best interests of the country. I do not vote for either left socialist or right socialist, I vote for anti-socialist and I see that I do not have much to look forward to.
