Arkansas - Gov. Huckabee to pardon Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards ticket

Excerpt -

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - As the bass guitarist for an obscure rock band, Mike Huckabee is unlikely ever to have the pleasure of giving the downbeat to world-famous Keith Richards, lead guitarist for the legendary Rolling Stones.

But, as governor of Arkansas, Huckabee can at least give Richards the satisfaction of knowing that the state of Arkansas no longer considers him a reckless driver.

The state Parole Board has approved a pardon application prepared by Huckabee and his chief lawyer. The board posted its official notice Tuesday; within 30 days, the pardon will be forwarded to Huckabee for final action.

Richards was arrested at Fordyce on July 5, 1975, as he and fellow Stones member Ron Wood traveled from Memphis, Tenn., to Dallas. The group, which included a security guard and a fan of the band, stopped in the south Arkansas town for lunch, and then got back on the road with Richards at the wheel.

The group, which included a security guard and a fan of the band . . .

That’s one way of putting it.

"I wanted to clear his 'record' in Arkansas as a goodwill gesture," the governor said.

Right - either that, or get a little free nationwide feel-good publicity as you're "considering a run for president in 2008."

In those days, down that way, he's lucky they didn't lock him up and shave his head.

"I just thought the connection between Geldof and the Labour Party . . . was just too tight; and I don't see debt reduction as being like -- it's not going to feed the babies down there . . . I mean, who's this gratifying and where are the Africans? Where was their say? And I thought it was being stuck together too fast. I never had so much pressure in my life from so many knights of the realm."

"Oh yeah, all the Sirs had a bash, believe me. Every one of them. I wondered who was pulling the strings, that's all. You know what I mean?"

Huckabee just gets lamer and lamer. I'm embarrassed that FR had such a close relationship with him for a long time.

"gets lamer and lamer"

I would have done the same thing in the Gov's shoes. Nothing wrong with recognizing genius in this harmless way...

Many of us have done FAR worse than this minor infraction.

I suspect the Gov will get some REALLY NICE tickets to one of the final european shows this summer:)

"...Keith Richards, lead guitarist for the legendary Rolling Stones."

I can't believe no rabid Stones fan has leapt to say that Keef was/is primarily a rhythm guitarist, NOT lead; lead duties were almost always assumed by Brian, Mick, Ron, etc.

I suspect that had the gov asked for the tickets, he would have gotten them.

That's not accurate. I used to think that was the case until I saw the videos from the 1960s. Ed Sullivan appearances, the TAMI show, British television appearances...I have never seen a Brian Jones lead. I always thought they were his, but on stage, contrary to everything I'd ever read, he looked like a barely-competent rhythm player. Which couldn't have been the case, but he had a deer-in-headlights look on a lot of what I've seen.

My respect for Keith's lead playing rose quite a bit when I saw that it was him doing those leads.
