Marriott to make all US, Canada hotels non-smoking
Wednesday July 19, 6:34 am ET
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Marriott International Inc. (NYSE:MAR - News) on Wednesday said it will make all of its hotels in the United States and Canada entirely non-smoking, beginning in September.
The company said the policy change, which it called the largest in its industry, covers more than 2,300 hotels and corporate apartments with nearly 400,000 rooms.
Marriott, based in Bethesda, Maryland, said more than 90 percent of its guest rooms are already non-smoking. It said more customers have been demanding non-smoking rooms.
The change covers such brands as Marriott, Ritz-Carlton, Renaissance, Courtyard, Residence Inn and Fairfield Inn. Marriott has nearly 2,800 lodging properties in the United States and 67 other countries.
I think sometimes nonsmokers are angry because we are enjoying life and they would like to, too, but can't because they want to be PC. So they take it out on us mavericks who refuse to cowtow to them.
Freedom advocats have been doing it for at least all of recorded history.
Who appointed you to tell people what to do?
Tobacco smoke is exhaled from the smoker's lungs. It is, therefore, excrement.
You don't own any airspace. If you did, you could theoretically charge a toll for aircraft moving across / through it, and you can't.
I assume control over the air I breathe. Smoke all you want, I don't care. But keep your smoke out of my lungs. Is that too much to ask?
Then if you see people smoking, leave; or you know of a place where people smoke, don't go there.
keep your smoke out of my lungs. Is that too much to ask?
Yes.
And I would say simply (from one of your favorite quotes):
"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their consciences." - C.S Lewis"
But keep your smoke out of my lungs. Is that too much to ask?
Uh huh. So it is your opinion that the smoker's "right" to smoke trumps others' right to breathe non-smoke infested air?
Yes.
Really? You are so militant that you advocate filling my lungs with your excrement? How selfish and rude.
Pot, meet kettle.
I feel good, too, but have a few gray hairs on the sides of my head.....and have 3 more years on the planet than you..
I don't know where they went to on top of my head, though.....
LOL!
So, I want to breathe. You want to smoke. I politely ask you not to blow your smoke into my lungs, you do so, and we are both equally selfish and rude.
Gotcha.
I'll quit smoking if you quit b#itching.
You go first.
Smoke all you want. I don't care.
Smoke 5 cartons of unfiltered a day. I don't care.
Grow tobacco in your yard. Set it all on fire and stand in the midst of it. I don't care.
Seal all your windows and set a bonfire of ciggys within. I don't care.
Smoke all day every day for the rest of your life. I don't care.
Just let me breathe without my air being infested with your smoke. It's that simple.
Uh, no thanks.
I used to be considerate of you people until you got all hysterical, crazy, and militant, and started passing all kinds of laws.
Not anymore.
And it's pretty rude of you to advocate preventing me from smoking in places you would never dream of going anyway.
Not at all...as long as you're not in my face, you won't get smoke in your lungs.
No matter how loud the zealots claim that they were choking on my smoking, at 50 feet away, outdoors, in a 25mph breeze....the claims never cease.
But no matter, some of us will still excercise our right to act in accordance with our own freedom and pursuit of happiness, enjoying what we do in our own best interest, in spite of objections of those who would like to confer their expertise and ill-founded claims in OUR faces....
Well, even me. I have smoked since I was 16. (Peer pressure). And I go for check-ups and my lungs are clear. Go figure. To hear the anti's talk, we should all be dead by now.
Cigarettes are legal. I enjoy smoking and I know that smoking might not be good for me. But it's a risk I am willing to take. If I never smoked, that doesn't insure that I will live forever, either. Everyone dies. Smokers and non-smokers.
No one gets out of this world alive. :)
