Marriott to make all US, Canada hotels non-smoking
Wednesday July 19, 6:34 am ET

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Marriott International Inc. (NYSE:MAR - News) on Wednesday said it will make all of its hotels in the United States and Canada entirely non-smoking, beginning in September.

The company said the policy change, which it called the largest in its industry, covers more than 2,300 hotels and corporate apartments with nearly 400,000 rooms.

Marriott, based in Bethesda, Maryland, said more than 90 percent of its guest rooms are already non-smoking. It said more customers have been demanding non-smoking rooms.

The change covers such brands as Marriott, Ritz-Carlton, Renaissance, Courtyard, Residence Inn and Fairfield Inn. Marriott has nearly 2,800 lodging properties in the United States and 67 other countries.

I don't know why they wouldn't complain.

Maybe because we recognize the fact that there are things in this world that are offensive to someone and we don't go crying to nanny everytime our noses are offended.

Well, they better get over it, because smokers aren't going anywhere any time soon!

I think that is what the bitching is all about. Because they can't force us to conform.

"The rinse water bucket looked like a spittoon when we were done a room. And we had to throw out all the carpeting because of the smell."

Natural gas heat can cause yellowing, too.

Yes, it can cause yellowing. But I'm in FL. The house has an energy efficient, two stage heat pump for heating and cooling. Very few people here use natural gas in their homes.

Is it hateful to tell smokers the truth?

And, you have no problem with inhibiting "behaviors" by the government?

Actually, I do and the thought that these smoking bans will be used as precedent bothers me. However, I am a realist and can plainly see that the current arguments not making it with the general public and their elected officials.

They are failing because smokers refuse to act in a way that the nonsmoker believes they are being respectful.

You can argue that nonsmokers should be more tolerant but that apparently isn't working. You can argue that nonsmokers should be more concerned with other sources of smell, but that isn't working. You can argue that this is an invasion of natural rights, but that isn't working.

The nonsmokers are truly fed up with the smokers and are on a roll. This track that nonsmokers are on will, in my opinion, not stop until smoking is only allowed in a private home that is childless.

The only hope in stopping this trend is that smokers become more polite and self police their own smoking. But based on how desperate they seem to ignore and stay in denial about their effect on others, that is never going to happen.

People smoke in no smoking rooms all the time.

This is so true. We were at a designer hotel which was no smoking. The manager told us to go ahead and smoke. Everyone does anyway, and I bet the next antsmoking nazi who stayed there thought smugly that there were no foul smoking odors there cause they got a "nonsmoking room". LOL

80% of the adult population does not smoke though...so I don't understand the money argument...

I bet that number is grossly inflated. Figuring adults only.

Uh huh.

Because someone does not tolerate rude SOBs who force their smoke down our lungs, that makes us "militant?"

Bingo. No conservative (I hope) favors the government imposing its will on private establishments to stop people from smoking. And these decrees by government are not propelled by conservatives. However, if smokers insist on blowing their smoke in others' faces, they have no one but themselves to blame when the nanny state intervenes.

Exactly!

When the war on the smokers started, the anti's tried to shame us into quitting or put shame on us because we are smokers.

When they saw that their war on the smoker wasn't working, they then turned to the general non-smoking public, telling them that smokers are KILLING everyone with second hand smoke.

Well, hang tough.  Short of banning the stuff, I refuse to quit.  I enjoy smoking.  It enhances my quality of life and it sure beats getting drunk and/or living on prescription drugs!

I like my smokes, too, and I am 58 years old and don't take pills for anything. Everybody I know takes pills for something. I feel good, and don't have a gray hair on my head, yet. I walk everyday and truly enjoy life. Even my Dr says I am disgustingly healthy. LOL

"The only hope in stopping this trend is that smokers become more polite"

The only problem (and the crux of the issue, I think), is the idea that your interpretation implies that smokers are impolite, and need to be punished.

I would submit that when the Thought Police take over (as in this case, clearly), then we all lose....
