LOS ANGELES -- Flights in and out of three Southland airports have been halted because of a power failure affecting radar and the Southern California air traffic control system.
The affected airports are
[Los] Angeles International Airport,
Bob Hope Airport in Burbank and
Ontario International Airport.
Is this like a blackout because of high power usage or something?

I would think they would have generator back-up especially since it happened before.
CA Freepers still on line??
Could be a real opportunity for someone from Onan or Caterpillar. Maybe give them a power-point or something.
Power on in Riverside county.
Heck, *two* generators, in case one doesn't start, for that function.
The NBC anchors speculated that that was a possibility, but stated that the cause was yet unknown. I didn't hear them mention anything about backup generation.
Power is still on in San Diego.
That's scarey that there is no backup for that!

Power outages interrupt train, air service in New York
NEW YORK (CNN) -- Scattered power outages in New York inconvenienced tens of thousands of travelers Tuesday as Con Edison struggled to meet high demand for power in the face of sweltering temperatures. At LaGuardia Airport in Queens, hundreds of passengers became stranded at 8 a.m. Tuesday, when power outages interrupted security screening at the Marine Terminal and darkened part of the main terminal.
Delta Air Lines canceled flights in its shuttle operation to Washington and Boston, Massachusetts, which is run out of the Marine Terminal on the airport's west side, said spokesman Anthony Black.
Outbound passengers could not be screened.
I live reasonably close to LAX and no problems here - full power all day.
pathetic. I bet they've spent 10s of millions of dollars for diversity training for airport employees, yet couldn't spend a million for redundant back up generators.
Well, as you may know, CA is unable to build any new powerplants within the state. It's the old "not in my back yard" story.
A power outage at the Los Angeles Air Route Traffic Control Center Tuesday cut communications and brought incoming and outgoing flights in Southern California to a standstill, a Federal Aviation Administration spokesman said.
"We lost everything, we lost all power to phone lines, computers, everything," said Allen Kenitzer, a regional spokesman for the FAA.
The outage was reported around 6 p.m., Kenitzer said, and the cause was not known.
The center is located in the high desert near Palmdale.

I am here....no planes taking off.....this is the tracon going down...did see some local helos flying around.
Last time Palmdale went down they forgot to reboot the system remember?
Yeah, but couldn't they have some sort of backup generator for essential stuff? Hospitals generally do, I believe. What if ATC went out while they were bringing planes in for a landing?
