Rice Says Israel May Need to Prolong Offensive

Israel may need to prolong its offensive in Lebanon to further reduce the threat from Hezbollah, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said today, as some Democrats called on her to travel to the region immediately to help defuse the crisis.

Ms. Rice appeared to support a longer-term Israeli effort to inflict decisive damage to Hezbollah’s presence in Lebanon. She also said she was considering a trip to the region.

“A cessation of violence is crucial, but if that cessation of violence is hostage to Hezbollah’s next decision to launch missiles into Israel or Hamas’s next decision to abduct an Israeli citizen, then we will have gotten nowhere,” she said on “Fox News Sunday.”

Ms. Rice’s remarks appeared to put the United States at odds with most of its allies, which have urged an immediate halt to the far-flung Israeli strikes in Lebanon that followed attacks by Hezbollah militants in northern Israel.

Let the Israelis finish what needs to be done. Ignore the UN and the EU for the worthless antiquated artifacts from another world that they are.

The good thing about this is we stand to gain the more Israel slaps Hezbollah around. They're just an Iranian proxy and if Israel is allowed to finish their work and Hezbollah is left twisting in the wind that makes Iran look impotent among the insurgents in Iraq.

We know the rest of the nations will pretty much condemn Israeli actions no matter what. As long as we continue to support and supply her the job will get finished.

This is actually the first time that I've seen Rice act like she had a backbone, when it came to Israel, and 'not agreeing to smile and agree.' Generally we get some vague comment to the effect that Israel ought to defend itself, but it should weigh the consequences and wrap this up as soon as possible.

Nope, kick the snot out of your enemies until they come sobbing at your feet for peace. And if you do give them peace, and they abuse it, unleash unholy hell upon them and don't listen the next time they beg for peace.

End their existance, and it will be peaceful.

Unintended consequences -

The fact that Hezbollah, Hamas, Iran et al have long-range missiles and the will to use them against Israel must have come as a nasty surprise to many who thought they could coexist with them.

Now I'm sure many Israelis think the same as I do:

There needs to be a 50-km strip of barren, scorched earth all the way around the country. No buildings and no people for bombers to hide behind. Fence, patrol, and mine as necessary to keep it barren. Upgrade Patriot/Arrow defense against long-range missiles.

I wouldn't stop fighting until this was accomplished.

I'm very pleased with the way Rice and Pres bush are addressing this. The dims and the euro weenies are already lining up to push the clock back to status quo. If the dims think someone should go there, let them send over the horizon murtha.

Condoleezza should be reading the news on teevee at 6pm....she missed her calling and Bush hired her instead. She doesn't seem to believe in anything or even to stand for anything---giving such an impression and opportunities to the world at large and our enemies in particular drags America down.
