Just like Katrina??? It is up to rebel_yell2 to separate fact from fiction but imagine if he missed the chopper because some stringer got it wrong. Sure, the newsie asked Barak about it but Barak simply responded in the only way he could. REMEMBER THE REPORTING DURING KATRINA. FOX had is 99% WRONG.

He said they should be safe from any Israeli attacks if they stay put.

How about being safe from the enemy who make seek to take then hostage or specifically target them for death?

IDF won't shell hotels, etc., with internationals in them--at least, not on purpose. [FOX's reporter is talking about this now.] I'd almost be more concerned about being kidnapped by some of those lice scum Hizbullah members. [I didn't want to insult lice.]

I thought the questioning of Baruk by Jamie whats-her-face was absurd. FNC is beyond disappointing, I just blasted an email to Brian Wilson telling him he has got to revise his programming, these two minute segments with the experts are a waste of time, there is no interaction and no time for the experts to explain what is going on. MSNBC is on a story right now showing Labaneze blaming Bush for this whole war. Isn't there a place we can go to get the straight skinny on anything??? I'm beyond sick of the coverage. Fox is bringing in Oreilly, H&C and Gretta for sunday night tv. I guess they got an earful about their lack of live coverage. Why don't they give Ollie another show besides war stories? He would be great with live coverage of these events. Argh!

MSNBC Is reporting on it now
Here is all the state department has on it for now

A message to American citizens in Lebanon:

The US Department of State and the US Department of Defense continue working on a plan to help American citizens who wish to depart Lebanon to leave in a secure and orderly manner. To assist in the development of that operation, the U.S. Government is sending an assessment team to Beirut to facilitate the safe departure of Americans who wish to leave.

The Embassy is open and will remain open at this time in support of American citizens in Lebanon. American citizens may register by contacting the Embassy in Beirut directly, or through the State Department's Bureau of Consular Affairs registration site at https://travelregistration.state.gov.

Updated information on travel and security in Lebanon may be obtained from the Department of State by calling 1-888-407-4747 within the United States, or, from overseas, 1-202-501-4444. Additional information, as it becomes available will be released via the media, Embassy warden announcements and on the Department and Embassy websites.

That's what I would worry about.

I think our gov't guys have heard that any Americans seen surfacing in Lebanon are to be kidnapped by Hezbullah and used as bargaining chips to make Israel cease and desist attacking. I think that's why Americans in Lebanon are being warned to stay put, because if they go out, even if just trying to get to the U.S. Embassy, they are subject to attack and/or capture. I suspect it is safer for them to just stay put at this point, as tensions are running high, and Muslim Lebanese may not be so friendly to Americans right now, as they blame the U.S. more so than other foreign countries for siding w/Israel. It is safer and easier to get the French or Spanish or whatever out, as they are not useful bargaining chips, whereas U.S. citizens are.

Does this mean that eh US won't be trying to rescue people?

No, it means they are trying to use some OPSEC.

From what I've heard, it going to take several days for the military to put assets (such as the Iwo Jima battle group) into place. The advance team is setting up communications and scouting out safe staging points. I'm resigned to being here for several more days. The Brits also have a carrier group heading this way.
