Why the hell should smokers flip this bill?!  How about going after someone else's wallets!  I thought the government wanted smoke free!  What will the government do if they WERE smoke free!  These people need a life!

I was a smoker for 48 years. I have lost a lung because of it and have just recently been diagnosed with tongue cancer. I am no friend of tobacco, but I don't see where the government has a right to put a punitive tax on any legal product. I think that is just wrong, Either ban it all together or leave it alone. By the way, I haven't smoked in over 6 years now.

From personal observations a tax on cigarettes will certainly hit the poor harder than any other class. It appears that a much higher percentage of poor people are smokers and also a poor smokers tax percentages will be much higher than a middle class or above.

Another observation, I hardly ever see a person standing on an intersection with a sign asking for help that is not smoking?

Lotteries are also an example of an unfair tax on the poor. At stores selling lottery products it is very common to see someone using food stamps for food and buying with cash; lottery tickets, cigarettes, and alcohol. Perhaps if they did not make those bad choices they could afford to buy food without the food stamps?

Congratulations

Best wishes for your good health in the future.

I only smoke the occasional cigar (one every few years or so) I like you have a hard spot with “targeted” taxes or targeted tax cuts for that mater.

Boy! They hate smokers but love their money. Smokers are "criminals" who pay their debt to society by financing liberal causes.

Those who believe in the false science of second-hand smoke, criminalize citizens who have the same rights to a legal product (tobacco) as alcoholics have to Gin.

It is Nazi philosophy at best.

Freeped!
Yes -- 8.14%
No -- 91.86%

Just a thought but if they need money for 'the arts' why not just raise taxes on stuff for -- "The Arts".

Ballet and any Dancing Lessons - TAX them
Singing Lessons - TAX them
Acting Lessons - TAX Them
Painting and Sculpture Classes - TAX them
Artsy fartsy music lessons; as in any instrument that can't be used in Rock & Roll, Motown R&B or the Blues, like the Viola or Bassoon - TAX them
Any artsy fartsy Musical Instrument - TAX it!
Paint supplies - TAX Them
Sculpturing Clay - TAX it
'The Arts' would then be self sustaining.

Cancer is a horror to smokers, for sure. A risk.

The idiots who sued tobacco for their own actions, along with their lawyers are the criminals, IMO. Criminals who have helped revoke the rights of many people. I wish you well. But, the other side is, that sometimes smokers DO NOT get cancer..while non-smokers do (Chris Reeves wife for instance).

Smoking MAY cause Cancer. My Grandfather was one month short of 100 years old when he died in his sleep..he smoked since he was 12. Go figure.

Typical liberal airheadedness. Make smokers pay for something while they are prohibited from using the product that is used to finance the project while viewing.

Sin taxes always will hit the poor hardest of any tax

That's exactly right, but unfortunately, they don't realize they, too, are being taxed into oblivion. Same with gasoline taxes: they blame "big oil" as the target.

The other big "tax" on the poor is the Lottery that is WAY disproportianately paid by the poor/low income crowd. Trying to win "richness", while at the same time loatihing those who have more and are unwilling to share it with THEM....

If someone could PLEASE explain to me how a progressive tax system is "equal treatment" under the law, and still consistent with the 14th Amendment's equal protection clause......

<"They'll be taxing that next.

The only reason they don't tax crap is because it would disproportianately affect lawyers and Liberals....

LOL! I just thought of something!
If smokers should pay for the arts...
Smokers should be able to smoke at libraries, the ballet, the opera and concerts, and all of the arts venues!

Excellent point, Randall, but you know it won't happen.

The arts are politically correct and smokers, well........we're just 2nd class cash cows for the elitists.
