Rice Calls for Israeli Restraint
Voice of America ^ | 14JUL06 | Scott Stearns

Posted on 07/14/2006 12:34:19 AM PDT by familyop

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is calling on Israel to exercise restraint in its ongoing military offensive to free kidnapped Israeli soldiers. She says Syria and Iran must stop backing terrorists.

Secretary Rice would not comment specifically on the Israeli bombing of Beirut's airport, repeating the Bush Administration stance that Israel has the right to defend itself against missile strikes launched from Lebanese territory.

But as Israel exercises that right of self defense, Rice says it is important that Israeli leaders exercise restraint and avoid civilian casualties.

Rice says the Bush Administration understands that Israel is launching attacks so far inside Lebanon to prevent those who kidnapped two Israeli soldiers from moving them beyond Israel's reach.

Speaking to reporters traveling with President Bush in Germany, Rice said some countries, including Egypt, have been playing a very positive role in working to resolve the crisis by bringing parties together.

She says there is no doubt that others, namely Syria and Iran, are encouraging those responsible for the kidnappings and missile attacks on Israeli territory. "We have to remember that both the external leadership of Hamas and a number of the Hezbollah activities are carried out from the territory of Syria, and Syria needs to act responsibly and stop the use of its territory for these kinds of activities and it needs to bring all pressure on those that it is harboring to stop this and to return these soldiers and to allow this situation to deescalate," he said.

Following talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, President Bush expressed concerns about how Israeli attacks inside Lebanon will affect the stability of the democratically-elected government in Beirut.

National Security Advisor Stephen Hadley says Israeli authorities understand the risks facing Prime Minister Faud Siniora. "We have had a number of comments and conversations about the need to try and shore-up and not destabilize the Siniora government in Lebanon. This is a good government that is trying to bring greater democracy and freedom to Lebanon. It has a lot of challenges. This is one more challenge that they do not need," he said.

Rice says the best opportunity now to deescalate the crisis is through a three-member United Nations delegation heading to the region.

Condi just got things backwards and mixed up the chronology a little, that's all. What she meant to say was, "If Syria and Iran stop backing terrorists for a few years, THEN Israel should show some restraint." There. All fixed. No biggie.

Lol! Helluva post for a German to make!

He simply hits the point. Carpet bombing will create again millions and bazillions of new enemies of Israel. Everyone who is able to understand human nature should get it that this conflict will never end as long as those young arabic men will have a reason to take revenge. If we take the fact that many male kids suffer the outcome of their families being a "collateral victim" now, we can imagine that the terror in Israel will not stop the next 20 - 30 years. The current bombing of the IDF is nessecary in the moment, but it will also cause a lot of new problems on the Israeli side.

Therefore Israel is well counseled to avoid as many civillian victims as possible although they have to hit the millitary arm of this islamistic scum with all means of course. I am aware that this is difficult for the forces of Israel, but it is nessecary if they do not want to breed new hordes of moronic sucide-bombers that devastate Haifa and Tel Aviv.

The solution to this conflict lies not only in force and violence.

Oh, please. This is restraint. If Israel had put all their strength into these attacks, Lebanon would be a big smoking crater right now.

"Everyone who is able to understand human nature should get it that this conflict will never end as long as those young arabic men will have a reason to take revenge."

Do most of the more hateful antagonists among them really have such reasons, or do most of them have indoctrination from lifelong propaganda?

And should Israel--a nation so well practiced in restraint--need the advice on restraint?

And with a plummeting economy

The US economy is plummeting? Did you misspeak, or are you galactically confused?

Don't worry. What the Bush Administration means by "restraint" is "don't trigger a nuclear war in the Middle East."

How much can public opinion take ?

Wars - the one in Iraq, and the one in Israel, and any one - are not fought for public opinion. Public opinion - especially US and European public opinion - is a whore, and spoiled whore to that.

When assaulted Yugoslavia, Klintoons and Maggie Halfbright told the Americans that war can be fought without casualties (on our side anyway), from above 12,000 feet... they lied.

Iraq shows this very well, the Israeli-Muslim war will show it once again. The only answer THE "public opinion" deserves is:

TOUGH!

Carpet bombing will create again millions and bazillions of new enemies of Israel.

Wrong! These bazillions are there already: they're enemies of Israel not because of what she does or doen't do, but because of WHAT SHE IS. So bomb'em back into the Stone Age... ups, they're there anyway, so I recall the word "back".

this conflict will never end as long as those young arabic men will have a reason to take revenge.

Once again - BS! These "young" and not so young people don't need no reason for attacking Jews, in Israel or anywhere. Actually, they're so alien to reason in general... that what you say is just a psycho babble.

Shush!

Wouldn't this Lebanese government benefit from the removal of Hezbollah? And, while I am at it, why aren't they getting their own army shaped up?

Public opinion is not an option to have on your side. Remember you'll have elections one day.

And then ?

Remember you'll have elections one day.

The war effort is the first and paramount consideration. A politician who thinks about re-election during the war deserves to be taken to the courtyard and face a firing squad.

Churchill was quite aware that when the war is over the "public opinion" (that whore, I repeat once again) would vote him out of office - and he was right, they immediately put in his place a socialist (Athlee).

War is won with absolute determination only - the stakes are all or nothing.

Elections (and football, Herr Rummenigge!) are for the time of peace.

I liked Condi a lot better when she said what she thought, instead of trying to play CYA.

Sure, our Muslim allies need stroked from time to time, sure, Bush made it clear that we aren't going to jerk any Israeli strings unless they start looking over the Golan, a UN veto makes all that pretty clear, but in my opinion, it's about time for somebody to tell radical Islam to STFU or die.
