He was a funny man. Doesn't that make him the third celebrity that has recently died?

Had an Uncle that used to "rent" Red for parties. He made his living for a while as a house party guest. Worked cheaply as I remember only a couple of hundred bucks in the 70's.

I'm glad I saw Buttons on Broadway about 10 years ago. He was a funny, funny guy. And you should have held him tell his "blue" joke, the one that sent them all running from the vaudeville theater straight into the paddy wagon outside -- and you had to run there because you wanted to make sure you had a seat in the wagon for the trip Downtown. After the long (and funny) story of all the problems cause by the blue humor, he told the joke. One of the most innocuous things you could imagine. But risque 50 or 60 years ago.

Doesn't that make him the third celebrity that has recently died? I think so.

"Hey hey, ho ho, strange things are happening."
That was the ditty Red sang on his TV show in the fifties.

Loved Buttons....your spelling is wrong. He played in a number of John Wayne films. I'll never forget some of his roles. He wasn't a heavy weight or well known actor, but did a good job in his roles. Did a lot of TV spots. Probably more than movies.

Red Buttons was such a talented man. My favorite role he played was that of Kelly, in Sayonara. He won an Academy Award for best supporting actor. I cry everytime I watch the scene when he and Katsumi (played by Miyoshi Umeki) die rather than be parted.

I loved Red Buttons...what a great old timer MOVIE STAR..now he was a TRUE STAR...he was the type that made Hollywood proud...today it's nothing but hollyweirdo with a whole bunch of disgraceful idiots.
Yes, Rest in Peace, Mr. Buttons...what a fine Gentleman. ;o)

Hey use to do ads on tv for some hotel in the Catskills, anyone remember which one?
To: proudofthesouth
I do remember his performances in "The Poseidon Adventure" and my favorite "Sayonara". Everytime I see "Sayonara" I start crying when Brando discovers the double suicide. My heart bleeds when he discovers his Japanese wife played by Myoshi Umeki is planning to slit her eyes. He so rough, tough Joe Kelly with a heart of gold.

Red Buttons sign off from his 1960's TV show was "good night and may God bless". While I had heard many say "God bless", I had never heard anyone using it in this more respectful phrasing. Even as I child I was struck by how much more appropriate is this subjective form of the expression. Leaving out the "may" always seemed like a presumptive attempt to command God to do one's bidding.
Curiously, the only other public figure that I know who habitually uses this form is George W. Bush.
