From Tourists Streaming into Syria from Lebanon, post 47:

To: cinives

You all might find this damn funny, but my sorry ass is marooned in Beirut, where I have been working for the IMF. If anybody has any helpful suggestions on how I can get out of this war zone, I would be most grateful. Right now, the road to Syria is the only way out of Lebanon for anyone, including U.S. citizens, and the Israelis are bombing that road. I am NOT happy with the Israelis right now. I understand their concerns about their kidnapped soldiers but bombing the Beirut Airport was not going to help them in any way.

The AJC had an article today about a 17 y.o. boy from the Atlanta area stuck in Lebanon. He was suppose to leave today after a month visit to his father's family in northern Lebanon. He's hoping to get home to attend his senior year of high school.

So far it's quiet where he is, but who knows how long that will last.

Six days after he arrived in Lebanon his elderly grandfather died. The family feels the grandfather held out long enough to see his grandson. His trip has been filled with joys and sorrows and now this.

I guess the other thing I would ask is what the IMF is doing for you as someone there on their behalf?

I was just reading that the US is planning an 'airbridge' out of Lebanon. I don't quite understand how this works. If you want to read more about it:

http://www.cnn.com/2006/POLITICS/07/15/lebanon.us.citizens/index.html

We look forward to your return soon. God speed.

"An "air bridge" is the term for planes that would move in swiftly and ferry people out in quick succession."

"But the U.S. military is also looking at other options for any evacuation, considering whether it is possible to dock ships or land aircraft in Beirut, given the large number of Hezbollah militants there"

"Once in Cyprus, Americans can then board commercial aircraft for onward travel. Commercial airlines provide the safest and most efficient repatriation options to final destinations," it said.

The State Department added that the government would not provide free transportation but could provide repatriation loans "to those in financial need." (you are fully aware of this part).

Blessings

It is worth consideration that the French citizens might find themselves in deep doody with this evacuation, IF they can even carry it off.

EXACTLY what I was thinking. Don't get too excited about the French leaving first...

Rather take the C130 than the ferry.

Wonder where they're landing. Do you know if the evacuations are actually taking place yet?

Check this out...

The foreign ministry said there were more than 1,000 Italians in Lebanon, most of whom had said they did not yet wish to leave.

All I can say is, they're nuts.

Don't forget what someone posted about the lack of rebar reinforcements in the hotel walls. It is worth consideration that the French citizens might find themselves in deep doody with this evacuation, IF they can even carry it off.

Maybe that's one of the reasons Chiraq's been blasting Israel. To get Hezbollah to allow French citizens to leave without a problem.

More than likely that would explain Chiraq, mewzilla. He doesn't ever seem to do anything off the cuff, it's always under the covers.

Are you still there rebel yell?

Go to the embassy.
