From Tourists Streaming into Syria from Lebanon, post 47:

To: cinives

You all might find this damn funny, but my sorry ass is marooned in Beirut, where I have been working for the IMF. If anybody has any helpful suggestions on how I can get out of this war zone, I would be most grateful. Right now, the road to Syria is the only way out of Lebanon for anyone, including U.S. citizens, and the Israelis are bombing that road. I am NOT happy with the Israelis right now. I understand their concerns about their kidnapped soldiers but bombing the Beirut Airport was not going to help them in any way.

One can only hope that the French ferry fares better than than the Israeli warship that got hit. I suspect that concern is behind the State Department's decision not to pursue that avenue at this time. Also, keep in mind that the State Department would be really stupid to give much advance notice of how it's planning to evacuate US citizens. If Hezbollah has plenty of advance warning of a time and place that the Israeli military forces can be counted on to be taking a hiatus, they'll exploit it to the fullest. I'm not sure it's a smart idea for the French to be doing this advance advertising.

You probably already know this firsthand:

So, you mean to tell me, that our tax dollars pay for rescue missions all over the world, flying foreign survivors out of Tsunami and earthquake zones ...but, our great country will NOT fly tax paying citizens out of a war zone?!

Didn't the congress just vote themselves a new raise? What for?

How long are we going to let this stuff go on?

Just saw the tape of center city Beirut being bombed.

Praying for the safety of everyone in that area (except the terrorists).

What is taking our State Dept. so long to act in the interest of the safety of our citizens in Beirut?

Your reports remind me of the writings of the WW2 reporter, Chrostopher Isherwood, whose dispatches from Berlin were priceless for posterity.

"Government we will ask you to sign a promissory note and we will bill you at a later date."

Just damn! The US Gov. can hand out $35,000 in annual benefits to the average welfare family but it cannot pay for the safe return of US citizens from a war zone.

I am flabbergasted!

Just look at it as yet another tax....

How are you? I see from CNN that Israel is bombing central Beirut. I hope you're out of there.

"I don't think you understand at all." That says it all.

I know of an American college kid of Lebanese extraction who is doing an internship there. I had no sympathy for his plight when I was told that he was vehemently anti-Israel. Sorry folks. If you are Anti-Israel, the only nation there who does not START fights with its neighbors, then you are part of the problem.

When a good country is fighting for its life, there can be no ounce of sympathy for its enemies. That is the whole point of calling it War. To make it objective that there is an ally and an enemy and no one in between. Civilians have always been killed in wars. Once the Arabs started targeting civilians, that was the time to officially call this WAR. I hope Israel will declare it soon, and that the U.S. libs in power right now back off.

Just saw this:

"U.S. plans 'air bridge' out of Lebanon, officials say"

http://www.cnn.com/2006/POLITICS/07/15/lebanon.us.citizens/index.html

There's a "fact box" within the article which says:

"U.S. citizens in Lebanon should call 1-202-501-4444 or
1-888-407-4747. They can also register at travelregistration.state.gov/ibrs "
