Connecticut Republicans may soon have a vacancy to fill for their United States Senate nomination. Former state Representative Alan Schlesinger is being dogged by gambling rumors, and Bradley Beecher, former commanding officer of the state polices casino licensing and operations unit, says he received a call from Schlesinger on Tuesday, July 11th seeking information on who was checking out his gambling habits. Beecher is now a consultant on casino security and law enforcement. Hes also a critic of Connecticut gaming policies.
Beecher, who was familiar with Schlesinger, says the Republican nominee told him he is, in gambling parlance, a card counter who has been thrown out of the Mohegan Sun casino. Schlesinger told Beecher and others he plays under an assumed name, Alan Gold. Beecher shared details of his startling conversation with Schlesinger in an email to Republican Governor M. Jodi Rell and others around the state.
Republican state chairman George Gallo has conferred with Schlesinger and is concerned about the implications of the brewing gambling scandal. Schlesinger confirmed to Gallo that he gambled under the name Alan Gold because he wanted to accrue points on his Wampum card at the Foxwoods casino operated by the Mahantucket Pequots.
According to Gallo, who sounds like he is ready to force Schlesinger from the ticket and find a replacement, Our mistake is that we only vetted candidates using their real names, not aliases.
Replacing Schlesinger could open a possibility for a serious Republican candidate to emerge for a three way November brawl should Democratic challenger Ned Lamont defeat incumbent Joseph Lieberman in the states August 8th primary. Lieberman is committed to running as independent if he loses in August and is counting on broad Republican support to win. If there is a serious Republican nominee, which Schlesinger has not been, Lieberman will lose an important part of the base for his Plan B."
Connecticut ping!
Doesn't sound lke a gambling problem. Sounds like a cheating problem.
Yeah, come to think of it, it could be a good qualification for office.
This "news" is proof that Democrats are becoming worried about Joe Lieberman's chances of winning the primary.

No, not a cheating problem. There is no law against counting cards, its just that the casinos don't want to someone playing who can beat them. I don't see any problem with someone trying to get the odds in their favor once in a while. Counting cards shows that the person has an excellent memory for facts and figures.

Card counting isn't cheating, unless you believe casinos have a right to your money and you are required to sit there like a bump on a log. On the other hand, it doesn't help the candidate.
Being tossed out for card counting is like being tossed out for having a brain.
There are doctorates in Math that have a hard time with that, much less someone who counts cards.
I understand that the casinos don't want players improving their odds against the house, but why is counting the cards "cheating"? Isn't counting just using the information from the overall game to make better decisions?
"Being tossed out for card counting is like being tossed out for having a brain."
Given the caliber of many in Congress, maybe that is a disqualification.
The politics of personal destruction machine is being turned on the Republican. Here they go again.

Indeed!
Guess I'll be the bad guy here. We may as well bail and give this one to Joe, it is not like a Conservative stands a chance there and a lib that supports the GWOT(Lieberman) beats a lib that wants to run away crying (Lamont).
I wonder if we can recruit Ann Uccello, the last great GOP Mayor of Hartford (and a Conservative, to boot !). Yeah, she's in her 80s, but it's time to correct the oversight of her being denied the right to be the first woman Governor of CT back in 1970, by making her the first woman U.S. Senator from CT ! ;-)

Isn't there a single principled conservative Republican in Connecticut who will pick up the gauntlet and run a vigorous campaign against these two lefties? It may come down to Race Bannon or me. If Race doesn't throw his hat in the ring I'm announcing my candidacy. Will CT vote for a former bartender, opera singer and stay-at-home-Dad for Senator? We shall see.
If I had a steadier job record, I wouldn't be affraid of the anal exam the media will perform on me if I ran...
A facinating idea. However, I'm more along the lines of Congressman Rob Simmons, a decorated Vietnam Veteran and former CIA Agent.
The US Attorney in CT, Kevin O'Connor
The mayor of Danbury (about 75,000 people), Mark Boughton. Boughton is known for trying to get state police to arrest illegal immigrants for being in the country illegally. He's said that the high number of immigrants in Danbury have strained services, education, and led to overcrowded housing units. Most of the immigrants in Danbury are from Ecuador.
Unfortunately, if Simmons runs and loses, we lose his House seat. We could risk running 4 Mayors, including Norwalk Mayor Richard Moccia; Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton; New Britain Mayor Timothy Stewart & Milford Mayor James L. Richetelli, Jr.
