Senator Would Form Party (Lieberman)

Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman took steps Monday to secure a place on the November ballot as a member of his own party, Connecticut for Lieberman, should he lose the Aug. 8 Democratic primary to challenger Ned Lamont.

And Lamont aired an offbeat new television commercial that parodies what his campaign says are Lieberman's negative ads.

Under state law, Lieberman may remain a registered Democrat as his campaign circulates petitions to place him on the ballot as a petitioning candidate with his own party designation.

"I've always been a Democrat, and I'll remain a Democrat," said Lieberman, a three-term senator under fire from Lamont for his support for President Bush on the war in Iraq and other issues.

This story is getting better and better.

I'm not making a prediction, but it's interesting to think that the sane libs who appear moderate and reasonable pulling AWAY from the party could do more to defeat the Dems than many of our efforts.

U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman filed papers Monday that will allow him to petition his way onto the November ballot if he loses the primary election, his campaign said.

The three-term Democratic senator faces a tough Aug. 8 primary challenge from businessman Ned Lamont. Lieberman, whom fellow Democrats have criticized for his support of the Iraq war and a perceived closeness with President Bush, is popular among many unaffiliated and Republican voters in Connecticut.

AND HERE IS THE LAMONT CAMPS OPINION......................
Tom Swan, Lamont's campaign manager, has said an independent run would hurt Democrats.

"He does this from a position of weakness, where he looks like a desperate career politician attempting to cling to power," Swan said.

The Democratic party is certainly changing, 6 years ago....

And today Lieberman is the scum of the party.

Old Joe is forming the "Mostly-Sane Democrat Legacy Party".

Looks like some in the Democrat party are intent on another 1972 McGovern type suicide...pass the popcorn.

After all this time hasn't Lieberman figured out that you CAN'T be for the security of THIS Country AND be a Democrat?

No... he's simply a real Democrat -- a Democrat in the tradition of Harry Truman, Adlai Stevenson, John Kennedy, and Hubert Humphrey.

Younger Freepers may not remember the traditional Democratic Party of the pre-1968 era: populist, anti-communist, and patriotic.

America could use more Democrats like Joe Lieberman.

Yes this is fascinating. The democrats are going to get their Jeoffords. Let's see how funny they think it is when it's their ox getting gored. No pun intended. THIS is most amusing and satisfying. After Lieberman is gone and elected an Independent in the Senate, who will then likely vote even more with Republicans than he already does as a Democrat, who will that leave in the Democrat caucus of the Senate that is the "most moderate" Democrat? Are there any DINOs left?

I mean, the only ones who might qualify are some of the 11 Democrats in strong red Southern States, and they're not moderates, they're mostly lib Democrats who moderate their vote and speech because they know most people in their States are conservatives. If they were in California or a New England State, they'd be just as flaming liberal as Schmuckie Schumer, "The Fish" Kennedy, Billery, Dick Turban, Babs Boxer and the other 30 or so really flaming Democrat libs. The Democrat 11 in red States aren't moderate. They just talk that way so they don't have to hit the unemployment lines. So is Lieberman it? Once he's gone will the Democrats in the Senate be the "all liberal all the time" channel in politics?

Maybe Lieberman's independent run will split the Dem vote and a Republican will get in.

Lieberman is a far-left liberal. His ONLY dissent with his party is over the war on terror - which is significant, but hardly enough to get hysterical about.

If the U.S. can get a third party going, I hope it isn't focussed on Lieberman and people who are as liberal as he is.

Are you suggesting they won't be praising Lieberman's "bravery" and giving him the Profile In Courage Award next year? You're so cynical! ;)

Does this come under the RAT/lib/socialist category of "Eating your own" (when the candidate won't toe the party line?)

We could do without a CT republican. The last one was Lowell Weicker and our GOP Governor wanted to spend more than the democrats. Joe is as far right a politician as CT can make them (unless they are crooks.)

I think its closer to the left's political version of a late term abortion.

You are SO right. After all, it is their sacrament, so I guess Joe is their latest sacrificial lamb.

Will you folks please STOP passing on this drivel? Jeez, just when I think that FReepers are among the most intelligent, witty and informed folks around, I keep seeing this kind of nonsense

He is a LIBERALSCUM through and through. He had a ZERO ACU rating in 2004. He lied profusely time and again during the 2000 campaign. The ONLY topic he sides with us is the War on Terror. Not to totally trivialize that, but beyond that, he's a lib to the core.

If you want to talk about a Dem that's in the tradition of those other guys, think Zell Miller, or Nelson (of Nebraska), etc. NOT Sore Loserman.

The Democratic party may not publicly say anything about Lieberman, but behind the scenes they are going to be backing him every step of the way.

Lamont is an absolute joke... He'll be tarred and feathered in the general election and the seat will go to the R if Lieberman isn't on the ballot.

Lamont has ZERO chance of winning a general election. An off year primary where the moonbats are going to overrepresent in the voting yes.... a general... no chance in hell.

The democratic party is in its death throws... if it continues on this course it will go the way of the whigs.

R will win the seat without question if Lieberman isn't on the ballon.... You don't need Lieberman to split the vote for the R to win.. if Lieberman is on the ballot, he'll most likely win handily... if he's not, Lamont will make the McGovern fiasco look like it was a great campaign.

If the general election is an R vs LAMONT the Dems will not get more than 30-35% of the votes cast, period. R will win in a huge landslide. If the Dems want to hold that seat Lieberman has to run.
