President Bush will likely cast the first veto of his presidency if the Senate, as expected, passes legislation to expand federal funding of embryonic stem-cell research, White House aide Karl Rove said today.
"The president is emphatic about this," Rove said in a meeting with the editorial board of The Denver Post.
The U.S. House of Representatives has already passed the legislation, co-sponsored by Rep. Diana DeGette, D-Denver, and Rep. Mike Castle, R-Del. If the Senate approves the bill this month it would go to the president's desk.

Destroying lives to save lives is not ethical. Bush realizes that. You don't, apparently. There is no evidence that stem cell research has saved or will ever save a life. It is destroying existing lives for very minute chance that future lives may be saved. How did this even get passed in the House?

This is to fund research of embryonic stem cells that otherwise already exists.California is doing that. Why not find out if their money does something first?

Why do you want to spend federal money to kill embryos when there is ZERO evidence that doing so will result in helpful therapies, and by so doing DIVERT funds to adult stem cell research that has proven to result in extremely beneficial therepies? Are you ignorant or simply an atheist who hates conservative values?

How did this even get passed in the House? I don't know, but Frist now supports this foolishness in the Senate, so it will likely pass there as well.
Nancy Reagan his invoking her dead husband to shame people like Orrin Hatch into voting for it.

Adult stem cells: hundreds of successful therapies
Embryonic stem cells: zero therapies, despite mega fundingYup. Private funding is low, from what I understand, because ESC research isn't promising. But the culture of death still wants to fund research on human embryos.

This is to fund research of embryonic stem cells that otherwise already exists. The money is not to create the stem cells, but to study them. Even assuming this is true (which it is not), this bill provides federal funding of research more efficiently conducted by the private sector. How could a fiscal conservative even be in favor of this bill?

Kill this bill Mr. President.

First, there is nothing that stops embryonic stem cell research now. In 2001, the President only prevented FEDERAL funding for it. The President will veto a bill which would permit federal funding.Right on. Gee I wonder why there isn't massive private research?? Maybe because ESC "research" isn't about research at all.
Instead, it is about demeaning human life and about scientists getting their noses into the public trough.
I'm glad GWB will veto the bill.

If the returns are too far into the future, almost no company would invest in it.That is because Global Warming is going to kill us first.

Good for him.I agree. If this is so promising, they are free to get private funding.

"Even assuming this is true (which it is not), . . ."
I agreed with everything you posted Texas Federalist, but I'm isolating the first portion of it to suggest a second alternative ending that I consider equally valuable.
"Even assuming this is true (which it is not), successful use of the research money could potentially lead to nightmare scenarios typical of the scariest science-fiction stories in which human embryo factories would be used to sustain pharmaceutical company profits."
