President Bush will likely cast the first veto of his presidency if the Senate, as expected, passes legislation to expand federal funding of embryonic stem-cell research, White House aide Karl Rove said today.
"The president is emphatic about this," Rove said in a meeting with the editorial board of The Denver Post.
The U.S. House of Representatives has already passed the legislation, co-sponsored by Rep. Diana DeGette, D-Denver, and Rep. Mike Castle, R-Del. If the Senate approves the bill this month it would go to the president's desk.

It's only surprising to the idiots.
Excellent.
YAHOO...YAHOO...YAHOO.
Two threads with good news in 5 minutes...I just came from the thread that said that a Federal judges has said that raiding Cong. Jefferson's office was LEGAL!!!
We waited 5 years for him to veto republican bills that could have been attached to virtually any other piece of legislation like all the rest of the spending???
I understand the veto but ...
That's my President.
Scorecard:
Adult stem cells: hundreds of successful therapies
Embryonic stem cells: zero therapies, despite mega funding
Great. More pointless summer positioning over stem-cell research, just in time for September.
Destroying lives to save lives is not ethical. Bush realizes that. You don't, apparently.
No matter what you think about stem cell research, the government should not be subsidizing it.
Didn't think I'd ever President Bush and veto mentioned in the same sentence by somebody not making a joke.
Save lives by killing other living things?
What a pig this President has turned out to be.
Hardly, and especially when it comes to pro-life issues. Although your post has a certain porcine quality to it.
Embryonic Stem Cell research $$ just flows to the abortion mills.
Embryonic stem cells have cured ZERO diseases and saved Nobody. Adult stem cells on the other hand are a different story.
Any company can conduct the research, it just isn't federall funded. No lives lost with this veto Lunatic, whacko, far left fringe.
You're the oinker. What a nasty post. Your screen name fits you perfectly.
Kill to save hmmmmm
Or, are you saying he is using what is left of his popularity to go against a shortsighted, "science is God" mentality that will take not just America, but the entire world down a very scary and highly unnatural path?
When can only wonder if as India and China get richer and capable of doing similar research if their leaders will make such wise choices? A lot of Freepers will jump to some uneducated conclusions on that question.
"When can only wonder" = "One can only wonder"
Actually, he is saving lives by vetoing the bill.
