Can anybody give us a clue as to why so many American Jews continue to vote for Democrats in such large numbers?

It's less tradition than it is an addiction. Just like a chemical substance abuse problem, Jews' voting for Democrats is self-destructive, yet on some level so psychologically satisfying that in many instances it's hard to quit.
not hard to understand...many Jews (just like many non-Jews) are social liberals, particularly regarding welfare programs.
I suspect it is because many Jews are more liberals than Jewish.
From personal (family) experience, many mistakenly believe that this is the same Democratic Party as the Democratic Party of FDR, and it will take new generations (for whom FDR is merely another thief who reaches out of his grave to steal from every paycheck) to come along before the majority can understand that today's Democrats stand for almost everything that Jews abhor...
Dennis Prager had some really good articles on townhall.com about why so many Jewish people vote Democrat and/or dislike Israel.
It's a complicated issue; someone here at FR posted a really wonderful, rational answer to that perplexing question, I wish I still had the link. The Republicans were more anti-semitic years ago; and Jews were afraid of them, especially those who, or whose parents, escaped deadly pogroms in Russia or the butchery in fascist Europe. The Democratic party used to be more welcoming to Jews, and many hold fast to old traditions. Are there conservative Jew haters? Sure..but they don't couch it in fake anti-colonial language i.e. "we are anti-zionist, not anti-Jewish". And I notice at least on Free Republic Jew baiters are zotted if they show too many anti-Jewish hairs on their hides. I have yet to meet an anti-zionist who is not also a Jew hater. I have made it a goal in life to convert as many Jews as possible to conservatism and to point out their best interests are represented by the Republican party. And that fundamentalist Christians are our best and most loyal allies!
