Detroit, Michigan is a City in which all elements of political power is controlled by Democrats. It is absolute control as far back as I can remember.
State wide elected Democrats, including Governor Granholm, do absolutely nothing to provide reform to the citizens of Detroit.
Detroit schools send more kids to prison and the welfare rolls than they do to college.

My sister and her husband used to live in Port Huron. I hated it there. I did get to see Carl Welenski walk the rope from the YMCA Building to the Police Station in 1973. Six years latter he fell down in Puerto Rico.

I was born and raised in Detroit. Until about 1965 it was a great place to live. It's a shame, isn't it.
I grew up in Chatham, Ontario (born in 1962) and my Mom and Dad dated at the clubs in Detroit in the 1950's. I remember the great flea markets on the street when I was little, we used to go often to restaurants, the Olympia, Tiger Stadium, etc. After the riots, everything changed. I went to concerts at Cobo and Joe Loius as a teenager, but you took the tunnel bus and stayed on the river side of the street under watchful police eyes to walk to the venues. The other side of the Ave looked just scary. It was a beautiful city once, vibrant and fun. No more.
Like I said, it's a shame, really.

Papa Hobo
Words & music by Paul Simon
Mm------
It's carbon and monoxide
The ole Detroit perfume
It hangs on the highways
In the morning
And it lays you down by noon
Oh Papa Hobo
You can see that I'm dressed like a schoolboy
But I feel like a clown
It's a natural reaction I learned
In this basketball town
Sweep up
I been sweeping up the tips I've made
I'm living on Gatorade
Planning my getaway
Detroit, Detroit
Got a hell of a hockey team
Got a left-handed way
Of making a man sign up on that
Automotive dream, oh yeah, oh yeah
Oh, Papa Papa Hobo
Could you slip me a ride?
Well, it's just after breakfast
I'm in the road
And the weatherman lied,
Oo-------, Ah-----, Oo-------

One of the nastier things they call they call us conservatives is "Social Darwinists." I guess Detroit is full of "Anti-social Darwinists."

Detroit should be so proud of itself sending that commie Conyers to House every 2 years. Morons.
and do you know how long they've been doing that? he's up for his 21st term.
as i've said in another thread, this guy doesn't need to shout from the rooftops that he's a true leftie, he just needs to sits there while you realize he's been in office, implementing communist ideas into our society since before many of us were born.

I lived the same story. We moved my grandmother out after a mugging. Do you remember Coleman Young? He was the mayor that won election campaigning against STRESS. He really was a racist.

Yeah, it's a great shame. It is a third world city in the middle of America, not that the MSM would ever notice.
But for the vote stealing that goes on in every general election there, the Democrats would never carry Michigan.
Not that the MSM would ever notice though.

His district is the worst in Detroit? Doe's he have his district that hooked on the welfare rolls?
To: Mikey_1962
Don't forget Flint & Saginaw. Along with Detroit, that gets you the original UAW corridor.

Detroit does have a very nice Airport if you happen to be flying through. Just don't make it a destination.
not really nice, just huge. and it's usually worth the drive from lansing to get the cheaper, non-stop tickets.

Yeah, on the day he was elected Coleman Young told criminals "to hit 8 mile rd". He was announcing he wasn't going to work with the white suburbs, he was going to drive Detroit's problems into them. And that's about what happened.
He was a terrible mayor. But in truth, so was Jerry Cananaugh and the white guy that followed him.
The problem with so many of America's big cities is that THERE IS NO P0LITICAL COMPETITION as long as one party as complete control nothing is going to change.

Conyers is also corrupt. He was using his office staff as babysitters and chauffeurs for his kids. I doubt that his constituents even heard about that. even if they did, it's not like they'd care.

I lived inside the DC Beltway (Virgina) for 20 years. As long as you stay in the Government area or Northwest quadrant, your pretty safe. The rest of it is a pit. Detroit is still scarier. Of course I have only been near it driving once.

I love architecture. This is what I think of when I think of Detroit -
http://www.forgottendetroit.com/index.html
I was an undergrad at UM in A2 in the early 70s. We'd go into Detroit for concerts; I saw everyone from Alice Cooper to ZZ Top. I had a few friends who still lived in the city, but most of those who said they were from Detroit were actually from families that had recently escaped to the burbs.
It's sad to see how far Detroit has fallen.
