Very sad! It still brings anger. Is Speck still alive? Or was he fried?

Wasn't the Boston Strangler considered the first American serial killer, just a few years before?

I lived on the north side when this happened, and
I can still remember how we all felt when we heard
of this.

A&E had an hour show on this dirt bag, and he actually
was laughing with his boyfriend during the taping. What
a waste of time it is keeping these scum suckers alive.

Isn't Speck the mutant who boasted about how much fun he was having behind bars, and who had the state of Illinois pay for hormone therapy to help him grow... ah... feminine characteristics.

I was away at Boy Scout camp that week and our bus driver told us about what had happened when we were driving home.
Like the O.L.A. school fire in Chicago or the flight 191 plane crash in 1979. It's something you never forget.

Can you imagine an inhumane monster like this getting life in prison. He endend up in prison, a living the life of Reilly while in prison, because we had too many liberal/leftists on the US Supreme Court. And these fools had struck down the death penalty as being unconstitutional.
This is how speck was able to weasel his way from a rendezvous with the gas chamber. BTW, we have too many liberal/leftists on todays SCOTUS.

Richard Speck died in Stateville Prison in Joliet, Ill., on Nov. 6, 1991 of a heart attack at the age of 49.

Even if he had a gun they would have been better off fighting.

Better to die standing than on your knees.

If I remember correctly, he died unexpectedly of a heart attack in prison back in 1991. There was a bizarre film of him in prison just prior to his death; he appeared to be partying with some other inmate and he was bare chested in the film, mugging and laughing at the camera. The wierd part was the fact that he appeared to have developed women's breasts, so to speak. There was speculation he was taking female hormones or some such thing. A strange, freaky, perverted and twisted man. I do remember one of the dead student nurses father, Matuszek, swore he would never live to see another day if Speck got out of jail. He never did. The rest of the article does speak squarely as to the reaction in Chicago; the whole atmosphere changed, as if whatever innocence was left in Chicago, had truly gone. A bizarre occurence.

That's the very guy. He was proud of his female appearance.
It was a sickening display for the camera. He should have
been put to death in a public forum for all to see.

Speck had some problem like a malformed or extra chromosome. It affected his skin--he had extremely bad acne--and possibly his disposition. He should have been executed. The only possible motive is that one of the girls was a ringer for his ex-wife.

So he killed her and the rest of them so there'd be no witnesses? Or did he just enjoyed killing after the first one?

From
http://www.mayhem.net/Crime/murder1.html
about two-thirds down the page

"In May, 1996, five years after his death, a pornographic video made secretly in prison began airing on Chicago's WBBM-TV showing the mass murderer wearing woman's panties, doing drugs, having sex and bragging about living the good life at Stateville prison. A total embarrassment for Illinois lawmakers, the tape, believed to have been shot in 1988, shows Speck handling $100 bills and casually snorting from a huge pile of coke. At one point he says, "If they only knew how much fun I was having in here, they would turn me loose."

Whi knows why? But he missed one who hid under the bed and was able to identify him.

There have been serial killers throughout US history. Here is the Court TV crime library on serial killers throughout history, but with an emphasis on the US. Reporters tend to think because it's the first time they've heard of something, it's the first time it's happened. The "end of innocence" line is used constantly as if specific killings were some kind of turning point. They used it with the Boston Strangler, and with Truman Capote's In Cold Blood, about the murder of the Clutter family. I don't know if there are more serial murderers now. John Wesley Hardin supposedly killed over 30 men.

Richard Speck and the Boston Strangler were probably more along the lines of being the first sensationalized through the media as serial killers.

I remember the Speck murders. And Charles Whitman playing sniper on the Texas Tower that same summer. Before that summer headline murders were something like the killing of Kitty Genovese, or the Dr. Sam Sheppard case that inspired the plot of 'The Fugitive'.
