K-6 Merchants Pummel anti-U.S. base activists

Tension between owners of stores at Anjung-ri in front of K-6 (Camp Humphreys), who are in favor of U.S. base expansion, and Nationwide Response Committee Against Expansion OF U.S. Base Expansion(NRC) came to a boil, finally resulting in violence.

Around 9pm, July 8th, at Won-jung Intersection, which is the entrance to Daechu-ri, Paeng-sung Town, Pyong-taek City, a site scheduled for U.S. base expansion, an NRC member Mr. Kwak(age:33, Daechu-ri, Paeng-sung Town) and two of his colleagues rode a van into Daechu-ri, when he was battered by Anjung-ri merchants, according to NRC.

Mr. Kwak sustained head injuries and is being treated at a nearby hospital.

On this day, at Won-jung Intersection, 400 'Peace Marchers Against Pyong-taek U.S. Base Expansion and S. Korea-U.S. FTA' had a candle light vigil at Pyong-taek Station and were about to move into Daechu-ri, where 200 K-6 merchants gathered to stop them.

Mr Kwak claimed, "Upon hearing that merchants had gathered at Won-jung Intersection, I went there to see if marchers' safety can be ensured, when merchants swore at us and dragged me off the van, and hit me with square bars."

One senior member of merchants' organization said, "I have not heard any specific facts on the violence. We, merchants, had endured enough for last two years. We won't tolerate out-of-town entities interfering (our affairs.) We will stop them with our force."

Five companies of riot police were deployed around here, in anticipation for clash between merchants and NRC, but no police presence where the violence occurred.

In another development, 300 NRC members marching from Pyong-taek Station to Daechu-ri on the same night were blocked by 100 egg-throwing merchants, and decided to end (their march), out of concern for their safety.

They are to gather again at Pyong-taek Station at 1pm, July 9th and march toward Daechu-ri.

Pinkos have been staging almost non-stop rallies and clashes here for several months. Frequently, a large contingent of young thugs are brought in, who are armed with steel rebar. They wield it against riot cops, who are not allowed to take any aggressive riot suppression tactics(thanks to pinko gov,) leading to many casualties among police ranks, and relatively little among violent pinko demonstrators. The business in this town went down by 60% thanks to these violence. No wonder merchants are rabidly mad. Riot police was not thrilled to intercede. This time, they just broke up the fight afterwards, and arrested large number of demonstrators for unauthorized activities.

Pinkos are reaping what they sow. This is just the start. The backlash against them would be immense if things go bad in N. Korea and economy does not improve or more likely deteriorate further.

Thanks for the situation report; we'll never get that in the New York Times or Boston Globe. I'm sure South Korea will ride out this storm, they always have.

Thanks for the report! Nice to see the good guys standing up for themselves instead of cowering in a corner as they do here.

SEOUL — U.S. Forces Korea personnel are being advised to steer clear of a series of upcoming demonstrations.

July 7 — About 200 people are to march from Suwon Train Station to Suwon Air Base and from Osan Subway Station to Osan Air Base’s main gate. They are expected to stay overnight outside Osan.

July 8 — About 200 people will march from Osan’s main gate to Pyeongtaek City Hall, Pyeongtaek Train Station and then Daechu-ri.

July 9 — About 100,000 people are expected near Seoul City Hall to protest the South Korea/U.S. Free Trade Agreement.

Anti-USA South Korean idiots.....without the US military the little Ill Kim of the north might send his mindless minions over the border to gobble up the south so he can be your 'Dear Leader' too.

There were no police where the violence occurred.

Sounds like the police withdrew and let the business owners have their way with the agitators.

It doesn't hurt 'pinko' recruiting that college students think it's a rite of passage to protest in Korea--no matter what it is they're actually protesting. Nor is it a recruiting hindrance that collegiate academia in Korea is generally farther left than its American counterpart.

Re #15

That has been generally true, although so-called leftwing activism is dying out in college campuses recently. There are still vocal and violent minority who can volunteer for shock troops for hardcore pinkos, but their new recruits are dwindling. All these are disconcerting to commie-loving professors, who deplore the 'materialism' of younger generation.

There is something funny about marxist-leaning professors complaining about materialism, although I know that they meant love for money and affluence, an anathema to such academics. Then again, they will do anything to get sabbatical in U.S., or send their kids to expensive prep school in U.S.. What they preach, they don't practice in their life.:)

Left-liberalism in a nutshell.
