Sunday, July 9th, 2006
Guests to be interviewed today on major television talk shows:
FOX NEWS SUNDAY (Fox Network): Undersecretary of State R. Nicholas Burns; Wendy Sherman, counselor for the State Department in the Clinton administration; Rep. Peter Hoekstra, R-Mich.; former CIA Director James Woolsey.
MEET THE PRESS (NBC): Undersecretary of State R. Nicholas Burns; Robert Galluci, dean of Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service; New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson.
FACE THE NATION (CBS): Undersecretary of State R. Nicholas Burns and Sens. John McCain, R-Ariz., and Christopher Dodd, D-Conn.
THIS WEEK (ABC): Sen. Richard Lugar, R-Ind.; Sen. George Allen, R-Va., and Democratic opponent James Webb; NBA star Alonzo Mourning.
LATE EDITION (CNN) : Sens. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., and Barbara Boxer, D-Calif.; Burns; Iraqi Ambassador Samir Al Sumaidaie; former Secretary of State Alexander Haig and former national security adviser Zbigniew Brzezinski.
He's definitely there this morning to provide opposition to the Michael Moore/MoveOn.org wing of the Dems as represented by the rabid Katrina.
I missed the first 15 minutes.
Under-Secretary of State for Political Affairs Burns is on now talking about N. Korea.
Timmy is complaining about the tone and rhetoric from Bush regarding Kim Jong Il.
Burns says that Kim is a despot and the human rights he's denied his own people and thinks the substance of our policy has been consistent.
Tim: When the president talks about the axis of evil, he invaded Iraq and that Iran and N. Korea took the lesson from that if you have the nuclear bomb, you won't be invaded by the US.
Burns: N. Korea miscalculated because their neighbors are upset; it's not just the US. In Europe, when Rice meets with her counterparts, you'll see that NK has to choose to let go of their nuclear power or face sanctions in the Security Council. Very few people are defending NK.
Tim: Based on exerience in Iraq and no WMD, former CIA Director Deutch says that the next time we want to go to war,a there will be skepticism with regard to our intelligence.
Burns: I don't agree with that. I've been to Europe and not one country or person in those governments don't think that Iran and NK are going forward with their nuclear capabilities. There is no argument remotely similar to what we went through with our allies in 2002 and 2003 with regard to Iraq.
Burns is GOOD!
Interesting combo on CSPAN. Unfortunately, I have had my lifetime allotment of the voice of Lanny Davis and Katrina vanden Heuvel, so I cannot hear what they are saying!
Reality is whatever they say it is.
Tim: Bill Crystal says NK is firing missiles. Iran is going nuclear. Somalia is controlled by Islamists. Iran isn't getting better and neither is Afghanistan and he worries that they are getting too passive confronting other threats.
Burns: I strongly disagree. We have six party talks frameworks in NK. Rice is in Afghanistan and giving Karzai all the support he needs. Government functioning in Iraq. First class military and diplomatic efforts.
Next: The view of 3 former Clintonistas who dealt with NK. (In other words, who gave away our national security).
Burns was extremely articulate and good looking; didn't get rattled in the 15 minutes that I saw.
I guess Tim would have preferred we left Hussein alone and just hoped he didn't get nukes.
Excellent choices as usual!! Rush used to say, or still does say, that the Sunday Morning shows were show-prep for the EIB. Well, this thread is taking over that distinction.
I think it was more than that. On a couple of occasions I saw them actually rolling their eyes over Julian's comments, something with which I could sympathize.
Russert is bringing on three old Clintonistas who apparently know more about how to handle NKorea.
[They used Open Checkbook, IIRC.]
Tim doesn't even bother to give the appearance of 'fair and balanced'.
I love how the MSM portrays the Clintonistas who dealt with NK as "experts" rather than the folks who bleeped up.
Anyone knew what comments he made that could have angered Ailes?
ARRGGGHHH. I'm glad he's not on here this morning and that I am only reading this. (Many thanks, Peach.)
I haven't checked if this article has been posted to FR, but it directly supports what President Bush was saying in Chicago. And Russert considers himself a "news" man!
The Big-Bang Story of U.S. Private Business
By Lawrence Kudlow
http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2006/07/the_bigbang_story_of_us_privat.html
Did you know that just over the past 11 quarters, dating back to the June 2003 Bush tax cuts, America has increased the size of its entire economy by 20 percent? In less than three years, the U.S. economic pie has expanded by $2.2 trillion, an output add-on that is roughly the same size as the total Chinese economy, and much larger than the total economic size of nations like India, Mexico, Ireland, and Belgium.
This is an extraordinary fact, although you may be reading it here first. Most in the mainstream media would rather tout the faults of American capitalism than sing its praises. And of course, the media will almost always discuss supply-side tax cuts in negative terms, such as big budget deficits and static revenue losses. But here's another suppressed fact: Since the 2003 tax cuts, tax-revenue collections from the expanding economy have been surging at double-digit rates while the deficit is constantly being revised downward.

Gov Richardson: We should deal one on one with NK since the current policy isn't working. We should talk directly to them.
(Can we imagine if Canada became a major threat to this country and we let China negotiate with them and we, the country most under threat, were excluded from talks? This is an insane proposal.)
Richardson: We have to give them respect. (That's an exact quote).
Keeps saying the policy now isn't working. We're trying to out-source our national security to China.
Sigh of relief here. I just know the Administration has good spokemen. Nice to see them putting some of them forward.
I guess Richardson doesn't believe that China has much influence over NK.
Richardson: Get a timetable for NK to dismantle their nukes. Give them economic assistance.
Tim: If the president changes course, won't the headlines say "Bush blinks".
Richardson: No. The world will see that when the current policy isn't working, the president is willing to change course.
