Newspaper Accuses Politcal Author Coulter of Plagarism

The syndicator of Ann Coulter's newspaper column is looking into allegations that the right-wing pundit has lifted material from other sources.

"We are reviewing the material and expect to have a response some time next week," Kathie Kerr, a spokeswoman for Universal Press Syndicate, told The Associated Press on Friday.

The New York Post and the Web sites Raw Story and the Rude Pundit have raised numerous questions about Coulter's columns, which appear in more than 100 newspapers, and her best-selling "Godless," already notorious for the author's calling four 9/11 widows, who supported Democrat John Kerry for president in 2004, "harpies" thriving on their husbands' demise.

Kerr said that the press syndicate had not discussed the allegations with Coulter, who was not immediately available for comment Friday. The publisher of "Godless," the Crown Publishing Group, issued a statement saying it had reviewed the "the allegations of plagiarism" in her book and "found them to be as trivial and meritless as they are irresponsible."

"As an experienced author and attorney, Ms. Coulter knows when attribution is appropriate, as underscored by the 19 pages and hundreds of endnotes contained in 'Godless,"' Crown's senior vice president and publisher, Steve Ross, said in the statement.

So typical of the haters of everything America....Ann has been one of the very best voices of our day. Exposing the reds for what they are through and through. So they'll look far and wide to try and discredit her. She's tougher than most and will easily withstand it. I'm sure she's not surprised one little bit and has been expecting it.

TheNew York Post enlisted the Berkeley, Calif.-based iParadigms to run the author's material through its iThenticate software program, a web-based plagiarism detection system."

Software is only as good as the "architecture that goes into it. It is just as susceptible to charges of "plagiarism" (copyright infringement) as any other complex collection of instructions.

The ultimate irony may result from a close examination of "iThenticate".

Personally, I would not trust anything that comes out of Berkeley...

I just picked up a copy of her book from Barnes & Noble less than an hour ago.

The cashier, a cute red headed guy, dropped her book on the counter and it made a loud thud. I was going to make a funny comment about it, but didn't have time as he wanted to alert me that there were newspaper articles accusing the author of plagarism.

I told them that I was aware of the accusations and said that she was a nasty woman (nasty in the sense that she does not mince words). He then wanted to know why I was still buying her book, I said, "I just wanted to piss of liberals and support Coulter, it looks like it's working."

Conversation ended there, oh well. :)

Store employees are not supposed to challenge customers on their choice of books. The manager should have a word with him, and if he keeps it up, he should be fired.

I have to correct my earlier post and say that I actually bought the book at Borders, I always think it is a Barnes and Noble.

Anyhow, after your post, I decided to call the store manager and let her know about my experience.

At first she felt he was only trying to make me aware about the problems with the book, at which point I asked if they made buyers aware of allegations of impropriety with all of the books that are sold, and wouldn't that get rather tedious, as there are challenges with a lot of books. Went on to ask if they warned people that were buying the book from the Oprah Winfrey book club, you know the author that pretty much lied about the whole book.

The answer was no and, "I see your point." She gave me an apology for my experience, and I said that an apology was not necessary, I just wanted to find out if management condoned employees discouraging a purchase on unproven allegations coming out of the very leftist Berkley California.

Also told her that what her employee was doing was very unfair to the author, as it has not been proven and that there were actually others in the press stepping forward to say that they found nothing to support those charges. She promised to discuss this situation with the employee and make sure that it doesn't happen in the future.

Next week there will be a small note on page 17 stating that there were no examples of plagarism found. It will be just like the notes that there were no charges against Rush based on the Viagra he allegedly had obtained illegally.

Put the charge in Large Font and put the apology in small font and who can complain?
