SAN FRANCISCO - Democratic gubernatorial candidate Phil Angelides said Friday that if he unseats Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger in November he would sign a bill legalizing gay marriage in California.
Angelides talked about the issue the day after New York's high court upheld that state's one-man, one-woman marriage laws and as a California appeals court prepared to consider whether a trial judge erred in declaring the state's marriage laws unconstitutional.
"I would sign the marriage equality bill because I believe if we can get behind people to build a lasting relationship, that is a good thing," Angelides said at a news conference where Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., urged voters to support him.
The California Legislature last year became the first lawmaking body in the nation to legalize gay marriage. Schwarzenegger vetoed the bill, saying it was up to voters or the courts, not lawmakers, to settle the matter.
The measure's sponsor, Assemblyman Mark Leno, D-San Francisco, plans to reintroduce it in December after the election.
Clinton, who does not support gay marriage, refused to answer questions about Thursday's court ruling in her home state, but made a brief pitch on Angelides' behalf.

The veto was a good move. But before you cheer too loudly, you should know that the same day he passed a slew of pro-GLBT legislation giving domestic partners most of the same rights as marriage anyway.

...see the kinds of things that are at stake in this election seeing what Angelides is saying here.

This guy is a frothing socialist. Tax and power crazy just like the rest of the leftist mob in Sacramento. This guy must be stopped -- he would most likely make Gray Davis look like a saint -- for those of us who have spent our lives in California, watching this state go down the crapper has been a tragedy in our lives -- the magic of the liberal socialist touch. Tax, tax, tax. Spend, spend, spend.
We are in alot of trouble already -- this leftist maggot would finish us off.
off topic but has the gub said if he supports the Eminent Domain initiative?
Well, you can't win 'em all. But wouldn't you agree that he is the lesser of the two evils?!?
The people passed the California Marrage Protection Act. Democrap judge overturned it! The mostly Democrap California Assembly voted to allow gay and lesbian couples to marry, making the state's legislature the first in the nation to deliberately approve same-sex marriages. I think Rinold problem is that he just isn't appointing more Democraps to help him out, like a true conservative would! I don't need to research, I live in reality and in Texas, not the land of fruits and nuts!
I bet this plays well in the Hispanic community...NOT!
That doesn't make the 2nd choice anymore palatable in the state we are in.. folks from other states look here and say why all the commotion?
most states haven't seen runaway spending at anywhere near the rates that we are running out here the last 10 years or so, regardless the revenue, it is never enough anymore.
and now to placate the dems , the Gub proposes more debt and signs off on the largest budget increase in his 3 years.. something like that may sell in Peoria, but this isn't peoria. ;-)
So living in Texas makes you automatically better informed than everyone else, especially those who live in the particular state you're making inaccurate comments on? If that's what comes of living in Texas, I think I'll stick with the land of "fruits and nuts." Sorry, geography (and arrogance) doesn't trump being factually accurate.
And the California Marriage Protection Act was overturned before Arnold was governor, so I'm not sure how you lay that one at his feet. And in terms of the bill you're referring to that the legislature passed, Arnold vetoed it. Again, "next time, do a little research." Or are you going to site residency to me again?
He is campaigning to overturn the will of the people who voted directly to protect marriage in overwhelming numbers, and he has a Senator from another state campaigning with him?
A simple "I stand corrected" would have sufficed rather than trying to dodge the fact you made an incorrect statement with all of that gobbledygook.
And what's even more ill is that so many Californians knowing that Angelides is openly contemptous of their expressed desires, 60% of them to be exact, will still vote for this dweeb as governor, including many who voted for the state constitutional amendment against gay marriage.
Pandering... works for every party.
On March 14, 2005 San Francisco Superior Court Judge Richard Kramer ruled in Woo v. Lockyer that gay and lesbian couples in California have a constitutional right to marry. He declared unconstitutional the state law that defines marriage as a union between a man and a woman. Appeals to this ruling will be heard by the First District Court of Appeal on July 10, 2006, after which the court will have 90 days to deliver a ruling
Yeah you know what your talking about!
He is a Gray Davis Democrat
You can't talk to him without your cash.
The LA Times did a story about him and developers. I can't find it to link.
Don't vote for Angelides.
Most elected legilstors in his own party aren't fond of him.
The facial features of a weasel, the charisma of Kim Jong II, inspires loyality like a tax collector and has a reputation for integrity lower than William Jefferson Clinton's.
Yup ,all the makings of a winner. I'd venture to guess that his vote total in November will be <13% of the elgible voters.
Y'know, that ad has become such an icon, that this is quite effective in making a point! Thanks for showing me a nice addition to my next argument with a liberal!!
This should finish him! Angelides will not win.
as the poster above said "he is not even on the radar"
He is pushing his ethnic background because he has no substance.
He is another Dukakis....
(wonderful ...another embarassment.)
