SAN FRANCISCO - Democratic gubernatorial candidate Phil Angelides said Friday that if he unseats Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger in November he would sign a bill legalizing gay marriage in California.
Angelides talked about the issue the day after New York's high court upheld that state's one-man, one-woman marriage laws and as a California appeals court prepared to consider whether a trial judge erred in declaring the state's marriage laws unconstitutional.
"I would sign the marriage equality bill because I believe if we can get behind people to build a lasting relationship, that is a good thing," Angelides said at a news conference where Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., urged voters to support him.
The California Legislature last year became the first lawmaking body in the nation to legalize gay marriage. Schwarzenegger vetoed the bill, saying it was up to voters or the courts, not lawmakers, to settle the matter.
The measure's sponsor, Assemblyman Mark Leno, D-San Francisco, plans to reintroduce it in December after the election.
Clinton, who does not support gay marriage, refused to answer questions about Thursday's court ruling in her home state, but made a brief pitch on Angelides' behalf.

You won't even answer that simple question.
And you dare to say you "expect more from" Tom than what he's fighting tooth and nail for, with Arnold.
Doodle ,, get a clue..
If you can't figure it out from all I have posted here and on other threads , I can't make it any clearer, it's gonna be funny going back and reviewing this thread later and very illuminating of how some folks are so driven to trip others up..and it is kind of pathetic too in a way.
You seem to be slipping in to FO fill-in mode and are now spinning and parsing remarks to hopefully achieve some mysterious desired effect you hope to achieve by doing so.. lol
Hey, nice cop out! So sorry. Didn't want to disrupt the 'vote for anything with an "R"-bot' faction!
Puffing and posturing won't work anymore, Norm.
You clearly do not support McC.
My question is why not?
Geeesh.
Are you really that clueless or is this just an act?
You must have snapped a brain lobe if you got that out of my comments.. lol
Why the insults?
HELLO This thread is about Angeledes.
could we focus a little.
This is an issue which does help in the tight races.
Call it shock therapy, you entire course of comments today is 'insultive' in my book and certainly not for the purposes of instruction or discussion.
I guess you weren't around for the Recall where I probably posted a hundred or more threads alone supportive of Tom, how the heck you now twist today's comments into me being against him is beyond me..
You really need to seriously consider how you assess things, it is obvious you need some work in that area. (I hope that doesn't come across as an insult too)
"I would sign the marriage equality bill because I believe if we can get behind people to build a lasting relationship, that is a good thing,"
Awwwww. That is soooooo sweet. Even if it's an older man - minor boy lasting relationship? Or how about a 42 year old high school teacher and 14 year old female student lasting relationship?
I have a divorced friend who has a dog? Can he marry his dog and claim her as an dependent on his income tax? THEY HAVE A LONG LASTING RELATIONSHIP. Hey, he didn't say that a "people" had to build a long lasting relationship with another "people" type. Oh boy. All those sheep in Northern Cal just got nervous.
If you supported Tom in the Recall, why not NOW ?
Has he disappointed you that much, uniting with Arnold against Angelides?
What's the good of his leadership if you don't take him seriously?
He said he supports Tom.
He said he will vote for Tom.
Enough! of the twisting and misrepresentations, already!.
I asked Norm, dear.
He already answered it a zillion times! How many more times will you ask?
Is there a california ping list?
Is there an arnold for gov ping list?
Freepers need to get to the Greek Diners to put up the Arnold 2006 signs.
I really don't know what gets into some people..
It may be a bit of the "common good" gene. Who knows?
We have two lousy choices for Gubinor and some others who are not even electable, Might be a pig farmer out there I can write in, some one who knows how to deal with manure and pork and kennedys. ;-)
Til I understand.
Good ideas.
Maybe you can start those ping lists.
>>the "common good" gene.
Dang! That would mean it is incurable.
I was thinking it was just earplugs, blinders, and free pompoms.
